Funny enough the "fun" version is a glorified Power Wheels and the "eco" version is the most powerful, although the range is pretty short.
If only I had a little more spare cash...so close and yet so far 
And you know someone will say the car is to big (54" long)

With all of the impracticality of this car being used in current traffic world over how long will it be before something like this will become more acceptable? 100mpg with the original. Using a modern 4 stroke would be better. Maybe for our children's children's children, if not before.
Before that, we'll do something less extreme; e.g. bring the original Indian version of the Tata Nano stateside, or bring the kick butt kei cars here. (I would love a suzuki cappuccino or an autozam az1)
The only thing preventing it is our pesky safety laws. (Which, as I've said here many times, are stupid; if motorcycles are allowed on US roads we should allow kei cars on US roads.)

I would rather be in a Kei car than some POS from a neighboring state that does not require inspections. At least I would know the Kei has working brakes!

There are several areas of Miami where I could see this working right now. They'd have to make it flashier though.

That's true. Not long ago I went to the local DMV to find out what TN laws were governing motorized bicycles and home built 3-wheelers. It appears that it's is possible to build and register a 3-wheeler but I haven't finished reading it yet.
Re: motorized bicycles, in some states you can still ride a 49cc without registration. In TN, it has to be over 50cc. BTW, from watching on-line buzz about the bicycle kits there seem to be a few good ones and as you'd expect some that are junk. I got excited about doing that for a while but rather doubt it now. For the same money I could bet an older small displacement motorcycle.
I'm thinking that one of these with about 20 hp would be interesting.
That much power would get it to 60 in under 10 seconds and to 70 or so; it wouldn't be freeway-capable but it would be capable of out-of-town journeys on back roads.
I'd need longer swingarms up front or to switch it to a sliding-pillar front end to get rid of the swing axle rollover problem. Either way the wheelbase and track will have to grow a couple inches. Shouldn't add much weight.

One of my pet dream-builds is a locost Morgan 3-wheeler. I have to believe a replica could be built for a fraction of the $40K Morgan is asking for them.
Kei Car Solution:
Limit speeds to 35mph or less. Only one driver and one passenger (same as a motorcycle).
I cannot understand how our government allows motorcycles on roads but not a kei car. Especially when a used Ford Festiva isn't anymore safe.

I have a bike-engined trike dream build, too. BMW K12LT engine, transmission, swingarm, shaft and rear end, Miata front suspension. Fit seats somewhere in between. I swear, as soon as I can find a cheap K-bike donor, I'm doing this.
