    Keep in mind that flat blacks, as you see them on new factory machines (cars, motorcycles, etc.), isn't like the flat black primer or even flat black paint of days gone by. They have new paints/clearcoats that are just as weather resistant and protective as regular automotive paints, but have special chemistry to keep the flat finish. It makes me cringe a little bit when I see guys cruising around in flat black primer, since it doesn't protect the metal underneath at all and if left for a long time will actually cause lots of problems.

    Yes, but it started when guys didn't have the money to finish the paint job. At some point it became a fashion statement. Kind of reminds me of the recent craze for Von Dutch T-Shirts.
