I just made an impulse purchase of what was described as an LS2. The seller thought that it was from a Corvette, but I am pretty sure that it is one of the truck motors. Purchase price was $400, so not a huge mistake if it turns out to be one. How can I determine what I have and did I screw up?

It is an iron block with aluminum heads and it is stamped 6.0L. Unless I am mistaken the Corvettes are all aluminum blocks. The intake also looks like it is not the Corvette intake. It is pretty complete but no wiring harness.

What did this come out of, and what should I put it into?

I know that Miata is always the answer, but this is probably too heavy to be the ideal choice, and I already have a Monster Miata and a SBC RX-7.

Iron block means it's most definitely NOT an LS2.

If its not blown up thats a good price, thats more like what a 4.8 usualy costs. Its a suitable replacement for anything that has any other chevy v8 in it. I think either a 67/72 truck or suburban, or a early 70s chevelle wagon would be a good place to put it, or maybe a g-body track car?

We are about half way through a 944 / LT1 swap, so been there done that!

I'm liking the wagon or truck idea.

It's an LQ4. Iron block, aluminum heads, 364ci (6.0L) from a truck. Not an LS2, but good for boost! Think massive turbo (Holset for doing it on the cheap), quiet exhaust, sleeper look, and 700HP.

Sounds like a good plan! Will the stock bottom end take 700HP? Any cheap sources for computer or wiring harness?

What transmissions will bolt up?

With an adapter any automatic that will bolt to a normal chevy v8 will.

It could be either an LQ4 or an LQ9. Either way, if in good shape, worth $400 complete.

700HP?! Sneeze. Aluminum block motors are making more than that! Go iron block for those 1000+HP applications!

As to whether or not to LS2, I'll let the pictures of my three-week ago purchase speak to the answer:

I've had thoughts of finding a wrecked newer Chevy truck & swapping the drivetrain into my '88 1/2-ton, but I'm afraid that when I'm done I could have just bought a newer truck.

Of course, my '88 is in decent shape, it's been in the family since new & it would be kind of a cool sleeper...

Thanks. The 944 is my buddy's car and is our potential Challenge car for this year. The other two are mine. After doing the '04 Challenge with the RX7 we decided to rent a building to house our hobby, and the extra space just fueled the fire for buying Challenge budgeted projects. We also have: '97 Miata (Mine) '99 Miata (Mine) '89 944 (his) All were aquired at Challenge friendly prices and all run. The building also gave us room for a couple of non-Challenge friendly cars. My '98 Corvette, and his '94 Supercharged Trans Am , '86 Vette and '84 928.

It is all the magazine's fault!

I can't say no to a cheap sports car. It is a sickness! The Miatas keep following me home! The Corvette was a direct result of the Magazine's project C5. Help!
