No gasket is the best gasket. If the surfaces are flat you'll be fine without one.

What's the point of using a steel "gasket"? It's not doing anything, not sealing imperfections, not squeezing into defects that would have otherwise leaked, not acting like a bearing in anyway between the two surfaces. Yeah, like the others said, if the two faces are really flat, who needs a gasket. The difference in thermal expansion may be an issue, but I just don't see what use a sheet of steel between the two accomplishes...

    ^ what he said.

I have never run a gasket between the turbo and manifold flange.

oh but even a steel gasket goes seal a little bit! the sheet is thin and thus squishable. i do however agree that no gasket should be fine in this instance

Are you sure there is supposed to be a gasket between turbo and manifold? Head to manifold, yes. If there is one at the turbo inlet or outlet, it will be embossed stainless steel. Any sort of paper/composite gasket will last not at all.

Thanks for the input and the laughs, guys.

As for whether or not there should be a gasket... Well, Toyota used one on the car this turbo originally came on, so i'd assume there should be one?

I'll give it a shot without a gasket and see where that gets me. I think i may have just put a gasket in there because i spent hours tracking down all my exhaust leaks, and i was sick of it, so i just threw something in there. I am not exaggerating when i say that this car was probably losing the equivalent of 80-100hp through various exhaust leaks before i tore it down.

Trying without a gasket just costs time, right?

As for the stove glue gasket gunk, a few of the local drifters use it on their cars, and they don't have issues with it, and i think they're under more stress than my car.

I will try the copper idea before i go to that, though.

    Thanks again!

If the copper doesn't melt, it seems like a great compromise.

I have run copper on several cars, no issues @ all

What thickness am i looking for in terms of copper? Hobby Lobby seems to have 0.025" thickness.

I know more then a few guys that use the dark brown grease used in u-joints to butter the flanges. Smokes like heck and smells nasty 1st time but seals up tight. I'm told as it cooks it turns to carbon and locks in place.

Picked up a sheet of copper at Hobby Lobby in 0.025" thickness. Was 50% off! So... got it for about 4 bucks. There's enough there to make at least 3 gaskets, so i'm set.

    Thanks guys!

if you are worried about thickness start a trend and make a ML copper gasket

What flange type is it? Whenever we need t3 flange gaskets I just get this kit from felpro

    cheap cheap!

I don't think i've got room for a double layer of this stuff. I've got some pretty rigid clearance needs because of my exhaust/wastgegate setup. I think a single should be fine, though.
