Is there anyone here in the north east that is familiar with Megasquirt? I have a MS2 set up with a map daddy and for the miata ignition. Running extra code. I would like to change it over to run an EDIS ignition. I am good at following instructions. After looking at this unit I could solder one together with out issues .But I think my dyslexia is getting in the way of my ability to revers engineering the miata ignition setup out of the unit.

So is there anyone out there I can meet up with that could help? I am willing to travel. by the beer, the pizza.. .. .

Dean - I'm not an expert yet but at some point in the next two weeks I'll be bringing an MS-II online running BMW coil-on-plug with working variable lift valve timing and so on so... if you don't find an actual expert to help you in the next 2-3 weeks I'll be glad to drink your beer, eat your pizza and do the best impersonation of one as I can ;)

pseudosport (greg) is from hingham and he's pretty good with ms, i'm in beverly but i'm just on the finishing steps of my first ms'd car so i probably cant help you too much but wouldnt mind meeting up if greg can at some point.

And Scranton is not all that bad a drive actually. We have done many single day events at Pocono so scranton would not be that big a deal. It is also near Steamtown so my son and I could make a full day of it!!!!

I guess I need to make sure I have all the needed components for the EDIS conversion.

Hi, I'm by no means an expert but I'm happy to try and help.

If you don't mind I have a few questions so I can try an figure out your set up.
1. Is MS still going to be installed in a Miata or are you taking one that was installed in a Miata and using it on another project running EDIS?
2. If its still in the Miata what year is it?
3. Are you trying to trigger the EDIS with the stock ignition system (CAS) or are you going to run a crank trigger? So far the only MIatas I've seen running EDIS are using a 36-1 crank wheel.

Any reason you want to use EDIS vs.. well anything? I know DSM's use a twin CAS to trigger a waste spark coil pack. As long as you have two triggers available, generally you can make it work without EDIS. I have vague recollections that later Miatas have a dual CAS.. http://msextra.com/doc/index.html

I am going to be installing it in my 924s. My 924s has been converted to run EDIS using a 72-2 gear mounted to the cam in place of the cap and rotor.

No the unit is actually from an Mitsubishi Eclipse with the 4G63 Ignition. The reason I said Miata is they use the same unit and considering the number of miata people here it would get more eyes (considering that it is the same no harm no foul)

The specs on the unit are:
MS2 V3.0 Running Extra code. MAP Map Daddy good to 41 psi 4G63 ignition control PWM idle control On board boost control PWM Idle control

As I said previously I have a 72-2 wheel on the cam currently running an EDIS 4 based ignition controlled by a MJLJ from Autosport Labs.

Do you have any close up pictures of both sides of the board? Its tough to see whats done in your other links. I think I see some stuff other then the normal Miata ignition mods and idle control.

Ok, so to clarify you have a 924 with EDIS compatible triggering (72-2) and you want to use a MS that's setup for 4g63 to run it?

I’m thinking all that needs to be done is remove the Miata 2 spark inputs and 2 outputs then follow the instructions for the 36-1 wheel. Since the 72-2 cam wheel is turning half the speed as a crank 36-1 I don’t think MS will know the difference. Now I’m use to the Miata mods for MS1. From what I’ve been reading MS2 mods are kinda similar. It’s hard to tell without actually seeing the board but I’ll show you what’s going on with an MS1 board. Here is a pic from DIYautotune’s website.

The yellow wire with the 470 ohm resistor is for the primary tach input from the cam angle sensor. (non-band end of D1 to banded end of D9)

Red wires with the 470 ohm and 1k resistors are the secondary tach input from the cam angle sensor. (U1 to IAC1A and IAC1A to v 5v+ hole just above the proto area)

Green wires with the 1K resistors (should be 330 ohm) are the spark outputs to the Miata ignitor. (Note one end of the 330 ohm / 1k resistors might go to 5v area in proto board instead of the resistor near the LED. Green jumpers could go to different outputs)

Miata board will have these jumpers:

D1 & D2 XG1 to XG2 TachSelect to OPTIN TSEL to OPTOUT

Now I’ve not fully read the EDIS 36-1 install but I’m pretty sure all this stuff can be removed from your board allowing for a clean start.

My car is a 924s (not a 924) Ya I know but there is a difference LOL.

My car is running a EDIS ignition system from a 93 escort. I mounted the trigger wheel to the cam housing where the cap and rotor was. It was much easier mounting here than down on the crank. The 72-2 trigger wheel was used because the cam spins at 1/2 the speed of the crank. Thus the EDIS unit "See's" the signal as if it was coming from a crank mounted setup. As you probably know the normal EDIS system uses a 36-1 wheel mounted to the crank.

The MS2 unit I have is already set up to run the 4G63 ignition system. It came from a car running this set up. I got it "used" already assembled for a very good price considering the systems that are in place on it.

What I want to do is remove / disable the 4G63 ignition setup on the unit and add the components / rewire so it will work with the EDIS and then work with my car.

Does this make sense?

Totally got you know. Its what I thought I got out of your posts but I just wanted to make sure.

The igntion output for both (at least the first one) will be the same for both 4g63 and EDIS.

The input circuit for EDIS is reversed in logic though (XG1/2 cut and opto to the pullup) You probably can just invert it in software if you're using MS2 (rising vs falling edge input capture) instead of messing with the circuit. However, I've never tried that with EDIS only hall setups.

Sweet, I’ll try and go over the pics today at work when my boss is not looking. The 4g63 mods are close to what I posted above so far except it looks like they used different pins on the 37 pin connector and the second trigger input in the bottom corner of the proto area. Also they ran the resistors to the 5V output in the proto area instead of just grabbing 5v from the nearby resistor and making things look cleaner. For the most part it looks like you have everything already labeled pretty accurately. I’d leave the boost control circuit alone incase you ever want to use that someday.

Are you going to control idle? If not you can leave the idle mods alone too.

If you need help cutting out the 4G63 stuff and installing the jumpers for EDIS let me know. I’m around tomorrow night and most of the day Monday.

I just got home from UCONN so I will keep this quick. First off a huge thanks to Greg!!!! He came by and got things in to shape. Now EDIS is all set.

Removing all the 4G63 Ignition stuff really cleaned up things on the MS unit. I will post pic's tomorrow. As well as Greg found that the power supply to the MS2 chip appears to have a cold solder connection. That was fixed up with new wires and new solder joints.

Time for bed but one huge step forward to getting the 924s running under MS control.

The Photos as promised. I think I am going to move the Boost control wire that goes around the board and see about running a wire out from under the board. Or run it over to the proto area and then connection it through the board there and then wiring it back to the conection point on the bottom of the board where it is currently attached.

The Lab:

One WIre I still need to change. It is part of the boost control circuit so it adds another reason to re do that circuit.
