In the article lightweight is claimed at under 1000kg (2,204 lbs) and this car is 995kg (2,193 lbs)

I bet that right out of the factory, my 1990 Miata base with no AC and no PS is under 1000kg. My how we have progressed over the years.

In '95 Mazda did a run of 300 M2 1028 lightweights for Japan only. The curb weight on those were 2112 pounds.

No AC,PS or radio. It did have a hardtop.

Mazda officially reveals its MX-5 Superlight, a sports car rival to Caterhams and Atoms

    Snort. Chortle.

I love Miatas as much as the next guy (own 2), but a 2200 lb. car that does 0-60 in 6.2 seconds versus an Atom or Caterham? Sure, and when Rosie O'Donell puts on lipstick she looks just like a supermodel.

Call me when you get the weight to 1600 lbs. and the HP to 230.

2116 was the quoted weight for the 1990, possibly a Canadian car with no airbags. So your car should have easily been under 1000 kg.

However, it has only one airbag. It makes 116 hp and has a rear end that won't survive abusive driving even with that horsepower level. It's less rigid than the new cars. It's slower in just about every measure than the new "superlight".

I don't think Caterhams need 230 hp to be considered Caterhams, but you don't get to call a car a competitor to a Caterham unless it's under 1500. But they do both use the term Superlight! Which, if memory serves, is what the SL in "600 SL" stands for
