I've owned a few Volvos including a full resto black on black 745T. The manual trans 01 V70 T5 should have been the holy grail but missed. The rubbery shifter did the fun factor in. The auto 01 V70 T5 was more fun than any of the others. AWD Volvos like the Rs are very unfun to fix. I have been told that a 99 T5 is the best FWD to get. As for RWDs I want a V90 with a Procharged SBC.

Another trick for the G-body wagon is to get a G-body El Camino frame. They are boxed in the middle to make up for the lack of a roof, but otherwise the same as a wagon. While not an easy swap, it does increase the rigidity of the car. Or you can do your own boxing on the existing frame.
