Vettes eat brakes and tires if you track the car... like a set per weekend if you are really lighting the candle. Otherwise, its pretty much the same deal as any other performance car with big sticky rubber... more frequent replacement that a Camry but less than an Evo... say every 15k miles or so.

I'm not really digging the list either though... The only caddy I like the looks of is the one Andy Pilgrim drives in Koni GT (not the model, the actual car) and the 545i is a mess to my eyeballs. I'd go for the E39 M5 over it any day of the week on looks alone, never mind that sweet motor.

I would buy a Porsche 993 in place of the vette... same money but you will never lose a dime selling it later unless you wreck it. So... E39 M5 and 993. Both black.

Maintenance? Ever own a BMW? They are really reliable--don't get me wrong. But they have a lot of stuff. Regular wear and tear occurs on like 5 computers, four camshaft position sensors, oil level sensors, etc. But damn, there's a 2001 M5 on my block that I would LOVE to buy.

If you like the looks of the C5, buy the Z06 and don't look back. Otherwise, the C6 might be a better performer, and I personally believe that it looks a little bit nicer.

Stay safe. I have some friends over there right now. They say it's getting better (at least in Iraq). Hopefully it's the same for you.

Afghanistan is a whole nother ball of kittens.

Ok I think the 993 is going to be out of my price range 25-30ish or more 20k is about my limit. So far I gather E39 M5 or the FRC will be about my limit. Though I've seen the CTS-Vs in the 24k ish range too. I guess I have to have a test drive weekend soon.

Just echoing the sentiments of others, here, but if you're going to have a reliable Fiesta as one car, it makes sense to have something old, cool and impractical as the other. Porsche 964? '80s Carrera?

I guess an M5 would still be pretty awesome, too.

Unfortunately I don't fit in miatas, the audis are another consideration I hadn't thought of. Though I want an S8 like in ronin!

Definitely the Vette. You might wear tires out if you do lots of smokey burnouts but it will offer higher reliability and cheaper parts than the BMW. You can control the burn out and tire wear if you want to. :)

Seriously man, I speak from experience here. All of that military bonus money seems like a lot now, but it will disappear fast. Do yourself a favor and get the house, now. You will need money for closing costs, inspections, repairs, and furniture even with the VA loan. One you have a roof/garage, take a look at what little is left and get something fun and cheap to learn how to wrench. Miata.

Give it a few more years and when you get a nice re-up bonus use that for the step up to the Vette.

I know a lot of guys who went expensive car on the first big payday and every last one of them, without fail, is regretful of that decision now. Plus you'll never get a house cheaper.

Uhh well thanks for the housing advice, closing costs are covered in the deal, property taxes are minimal in TX, and there are brand new houses down there that have never been lived in that wont require repairs. Fixed rate in the 4.25 range is what I'm looking at. and a 4 bedroom 3 bath house with a 2 car garage and a pool are under 200k. Plus I'm not spending all my money on a car, after deployment I'll have somewhere in the range or 35k saved, so some was going to a car, like 15k as a DP on the car or lump sum depending on the car. the fiesta is going to be my gas saver. So I can has 2 cars for under 20k financed. I guess that depends on hoe much the fiesta comes out at.

Lexus IS 300 is a great car! I love them! My aunt has a silver one with all-seasons and an auto-tragic (why won't it let you use first gear in manual mode?). She let me use it a few times and even with its little handicaps it's a blast!

I think the BMW 330i (or better yet, 330ci) is a better bet than the Lexus though. You still pay about the same, but you get a bit more power with the BMW and I think the BMW just eeks out the Lexus in the looks department (inside and out). But only just. Both are sort of bland though when you throw the Corvette into the picture.

What do you think about the Z3s? I had a 2.3 (the base 2.5 liter 6 cylinder) and it was a bunch of fun (and it could still get around the track faster than my Miata). Bump yourself up to the 2000 or 2001 (S54) M Roadster (or coupe if you really need a roof) and you've got yourself one fast mother trucker. An Estoril Blue M Roady with blue and black interior is still my favorite car.

I have the same problem in the Z3 as in the miata, I'm staring at the bar at the top of the windshield I have to crane my neck to see out of the car, not fun.
