Most of these guys left for good and left their credit cards on the dashboard. A country with a debtor's prison is no place an unemployed person with lots of debt wants to be.

My across-the-street neighbors moved out before Thanksgiving. Just up and left one day. They parked their early-oughts Camry by the road, parallel to the street, in an easy-to-repo position. It's been there over three months now.
Anyone want to build a Camry-powered LoCost?

Well.... if it's the 2.0 litre, i don't think that motor would make me happy if it was attached to a 150lb motorcycle... it sucks. :D
The Camry V6s are marvelous pieces of engineering though. Might be heavier than a traditional lo-cost, but i guarantee it'll more than make up for it in the fun department.

i'm taking Dave Ramsey's "Financial Peace University" with my wife, and there are two quotes that stick in my mind so far:
- The borrower is slave to the lender
and
- You can't borrow yourself out of debt.
Debtor's prison? Wow. Maybe we wouldn't be in our current economic situation if there was such a thing here.

He's not being THAT picky, since those were the only engines available (until '02 when the 2.2l was replaced with a 2.4l).

They haven't used a 2.0l in a Camry since 1991, so I think you can rule that one out.

If it were a V6 I'd have gone over there in the middle of the night and repo'd it myself already. I'm really curious why the lender hasn't sent a truck for it by now. At what point does it become roadside trash for anyone to salvage?

I did the Dave Ramsey thing with my credit cards a few years ago. I don't use the plastic now, and strangely enough there is a lot more cash in my budget for project cars.
On the other hand, I have this vision of Wall Street financing of private debtors prisons in this country as the next big financial bubble.

Around here, it has to be tagged as abandoned first. You can call and complain, or wait for the city to do their sweeps, which could take a while (WARNING! If you call and complain, they will usually check out the whole area! Make sure you don't have any inoperable cars in public view!). Depending on what kind of tag they put on it, the owners have anywhere from 72 hours to 30 days to move it (usually 72 hours if it's on public property). Once it's towed in, it becomes city property after a certain amount of time (30 or 90 days, I forget). All seized cars are sold at public auction about every three months or so. Can you tell I've had a few vehicles tagged in my days?
