    Eric:

You'll find the scoring guidelines (and the awards) here:

    Pay attention to the rules.

    There are 4 separate sets.

    First are the event rules.

Second and third are the SCCA and NHRA safety rules.

The fourth set is the scoring (which I linked above).

If you fail to pay attention to the rules, you will probably not be disqualified. You'll still compete, you'll still get magazine recognition, you'll still have a great time. But you won't win.

The winners know ALL the rules.

First and foremost, they understand (in depth) Rule #1, which essentially says that the primary purpose of the Challenge is to generate editorial content for the magazine (my paraphrase). Cool will not be ruled out.

There's a reason rule #1 is rule #1. That was our biggest lesson first time out.

Could you elaborate on that? You guys have me a bit nervous now. I guess its just a matter of going and getting our feet wet, regardless of the outcome.

No reason to be nervous. There's a lot of fun to be had.

I'm just saying that the top finishers understand ALL the rules (and the loopholes), and use them to their advantage. They are also great fabricators, painters, tuners, negotiators, bargain hunters, dumpster divers, and a plethora of other gifts.

But the rest of us always have a blast!

My point was to help you not worry too much about the rollcage.

Yeah "rules" at the Challenge are sort of loosey goosey. Build a cool and or good looking car that is fast, and keep receipts for your budget or have realistic FMV for your parts.

Rule #1a should be that if you intend on breaking the rules just to win then you should be strapped to the hood of the Boss Hong and have fire shot at your groin.

Well we have some of those traits down, lol. I think our biggest disadvantage right now is finding and selling parts for prices that benefit the build, since we have such a limited amount of time.

I think the satisfaction of coming in second and knowing it was a legitimate second is far better than coming in first with no reservations so it sounds like we're on the same page as most of the entrants :)
