Went to a reveal for the new Lincoln last week. Quite a distance from its car show concept, and it disn't really have the appearance it does in the recent ad. Of course, the ad is very dark. I would compare the lines to a Buick LaCross or maybe even a bigger Passat. Lincoln obviously wants a younger average buyer, I don't know if this car is going to do it or not. I like the interior and the colors I saw, in black its pretty nice. The grill falls in line with Ford's big chrome trend, maybe too much so. The interior is very clean, nice wood colors, the only thing I really disliked about it was the laser dot written text that gives the driver information like the LS had. Anyway, here's some pics.

i was watching the advertisement for the car, you know the one with the touch pad for opening, and push button ignition?
well anyway it says that it doesn't need keys, which is great, but a similar car, like a Mercedes will just unlock when you open the door with the key fob in your pocket. so lincoln has added an extra step, by adding a number code to unlock the car.
way to go lincoln for screwing up a technology that has been out for several years.

Bear in mind- most Lincoln customers really love the key pad entry for unlocking their cars. Ford has been doing it since the 80's. Why do they like it? Not sure, but they do.
Doing the "same as mercedes" doesn't always mean good. Just the same.

Honestly, I was ripping up those key pads to a friend of mine who likes/respects the luxo-boats of the past and present for exactly the same reason and he looked at me like I was crazy. Of course it has a number pad...Ford even puts those on their trucks. I don't get it, it was cheezy when they first started it and it hasn't improved as a technology. Number one, its just something to fade, delaminate and look uglier over time, two its just something else to fail. I don't remember seeing them on these cars, actually, but I dodn't look closely at the driver door or get a pic of it. i will say the level of detail in the interior impressed me more than anything else. Nice leather and furniture in general, better than my buddies brand new Benz.

I think the fact that you even consider a Lincoln alongside a Mercedes is great praise, these cars are nice but they are built for a specific group, 50+. overweight, fairly successful, appliance drivers....I am not knocking them I own 3 town cars, but to compare them at around $50K to a similarly sized Mercedes V8 at $100K s not a fair comparison.
My only dislike, they went away from RWD when everyone else is returning to it....

it's nice to be able to lock the keys in the car when out: Snowboarding, biking, at the beach, etc I really liked that feature on my 01 Sable

if they are going for a younger audiance.. (somebody younger than not quite dead) they should consider offering aluminum or even C/F as an interior choice besides wood.
Youngins today do not seem to understand wood in a car and think it makes the car look "old"

Just what I was thinking.
At first I thought, many I just don't like sedans and then I realized that there are a number of cool sedans out there so it must just be the blahness of the Lincoln, but then again what else could I expect?

Well, it'll look nice lowered w/ some larger euro-ish wheels.
The stock wheels look tiny on that chunky body. Otherwise, it looks very current--albeit bland.

Well, I hate to break it to all that had high hopes for this new Lincoln, but, this car is a re-badged and slightly reworked Ford Taurus/Ford Five Hundred/Mercury Sable/Mercury Montego.
Not the worst car ever made and it is large but by no means will anyone ever asign the word sporty to it.

It's not- it's AWD- only option.
And while it's a derivative of the current Taurus/Sable, it's not the same car- first of all, look at it. Second, the enigne is a 3.7l, unique to the Lincoln. Third, the chassis is tuned differently.
Fourth- if you've not driven a Taurus/Sable recently, they are pretty sweet cars, for really big cars. They feel a lot smaller than they really are, so it being a derivative isn't a bad thing.
Besides, outside of the former NSX, name an Acura that isn't a derivative of a Honda....
No, it's not for everyone, but as long as it's for more than Lincoln currently sells, that's a really good thing.
And it has been announced that a turbo Di version of the engine will go into the MKS for the 2010 MY... ;)

Note to Lincoln execs: You wanna sell to younger buyers? Make something worth buying. I'm 27. I'd buy this thing in a heartbeat, and finance it out the yinyang, and come back for all the stupid scheduled maintenance you want to sucker me into (okay, I'm fudging on that last one).
Just make it black. Blacker than night. Blacker than Vader. Blacker than Yaphet Kotto. And the interior? Ebony so dark it looks like it came from a Bluthner piano.

So AWD/transverse is ok for Audi, but not Lincoln? The MKS is AWD ONLY, no FWD option.
As for the styling, can't really argue with your point, but selling cars is pretty important, getting younger buyers is pretty important, still....
