I'm looking at buying an old 1985 Toyota Corolla from Toledo ohio.. How rusty would it be? Do they salt the roads there? Is it comparable to Onterrible (ontario) or New York?

Most roads in Ohio, I believe, are actually PAVED with salt. In the winter they just spread some gravel to improve traction.

I'm a little north of Toledo and we don't use as much salt as a lot of Ontario does (I did live there),but we use enough to rust out a 26 year old Corolla !

What they all said. Lucky if a car makes it 10 years on Ohio, let alone 25. Go West, young man.

If you're going to all the trouble to import from the U.S. there's no reason not to go for something from a salt-free state. Any one that has shoreline on the great lakes is going to be equally bad.

I've lived in northeast Ohio all my life. Rust is really a big factor in any car driven in the winter in the upper half of Ohio. Cars from Columbus down are much better, but still not like what you'd see in say the Carolinas. Clean cars can be found here, though, so I wouldn't just discount a vehicle because it's from this area, but I would be very careful. I bought my last two cars in Southern ohio and Florida. The problem when you live here is that even though you can get a clean car in the south, after one winter here it's not so clean anymore. You know what's worse than the cars here? The roads. I'm getting out of here as soon as I retire, if not sooner.

As a North Central Ohian, I would say there is plenty of rust. I was complaining last night how hard it is to find any cool older cars around here anymore. Rust and poseur's are the worst enemy around here. The roads are getting worse which makes driving small cars not so fun.

I'm a half hour from the Ohio line (in PA) and have seen new cars rusted on the showroom floor. A common used-car question around here is "how much of the rockers are left" as opposed to "does it have any rust".

Wow crazy guys, Yeah the car is rough, but I really don't want to buy something that's all the much money.
My tercel came up from south carolina, and has 611,000 km on it, and is practically rust free, its amazing.
My dad's got an 85 corolla gt-s coupe that he bought brand new that I want to restore, but at this point, its been sitting here in canada for around 14 years, yikes, and this other one i'm looking at (identical) is in running driving order, and just needs some metal work.

umm just saying alot depends on the way it was taken care off. i had an 83 volvo a few years ago from mass that was virtually rust free. in the same i got a 93 escort in oklahoma that was rusting everywhere. so much depends on the owner not how much salt they use.

one of the advantages of living in the south... kinda funny when I tried to sell my astro van from MI... it ran and drove (needed some help starting due to tired fuel pump)... the rust (which would be considered mild by most up north) freaked everyone out and I about had to give it away... less then 2x what scrap value was worth...
just sad what a bit of salt will do :-/...

It's common knowledge we use so much salt that they just spray tar on the road after the snow melts. And that folks is how you get chip and seal.
