I think "parts washer" is fancy talk for paper towels, brake cleaner, and the sharp scrapey thing (old screwdriver?) we use to clean parts.

I had two, one with NAPA parts cleaner one with diluted Castrol Greased Lightning Purple cleaner.
The NAPA used the pump and the other basin did not have one. I can not say for certain that the Purple cleaner will work in a pump enviroment but it cleans the crap out of GREASY parts.

I attempted to create my own cleaner using water diluted industrial degreaser.
Attempted. It sucked for anything heavier than motor oil.
I'm switching it over to mineral spirits in the spring, disposal be damned...

I use mineral spirits. As for recycling my local dump has a seperate bowser for other petrolium products other than motor oil or anti freeze.
I tried various things like Purple Power and Greased Lightning but they left aluminum oxide corrosion on aluminum parts and steel and cast iron would flash rust.
I tried to get a service like Safety Clean but they arent interested in the consumer level, They want a monthly service contract at a shop and I dont do enough to warrant that. Besides I thing my parts washer is a "reclaimed" washer from a "major contract opperator".

Stoddard Solvent, if I could still get it.
Otherwise, Gunk Super Concentrate, mixed in kerosene.

A few gallons of parts cleaner from the auto parts store and a few gallons of kerosene. I really should clean it out and put some new stuff in there.

GASOLINE IS A BAD IDEA!
someone local to me had gasoline in their parts washer and some metal on metal contact caused a spark that lit his garage up like the 4th of july.
I use Kerosene...much higher flash point.

Mineral spirits. I have a 5 gal. steel bucket I welded a strainer pickup to the bottom of and 3 legs. I have an old fuel pump and a large hydraulic filter on there with a hose. I throw my parts in a rubbermaid tub and scrub with a brush and the hose from my pumping station. When I'm all done I just pour the mineral spirits back in the bucket and seal it up. Cost me $0, just stuff I had laying around.

Damn thats a good idea with the filter, why the berkeley didnt I think of that? My mineral spirits are getting a bit funky and I need to change it. I think a big fuel filter from the parts store oughta do it. When the flow drops off its time to change.
