The racing beat springs on my Miata are nasty. All the paint is flaking off, and they are starting to rust a bit. What kind of paint should I use, and how should I clean them up? Maybe I could paint them with that rubbery wheel well paint stuff?

what about spray on bed liner for pickups? Its pliable enough not to flake off.

I'd also like a paint option... The ones from my donor car have spots of rust coming through. I can swing free sandblasting... but paying to powdercoat eats into the 2009 budget...

    Cheaper paint options?

Not if you get the eastwood / HF DIY kit. The powder itself is cheap.

sand blast and rattlecan! It's worked for so many, for so long.

save the fancy powder coat for parts that will be seen a lot

I painted a set of springs with the sanding and rattle can method, I sold them so I don't know how they did in the long term, but in my informal tests the paint seemed very flexible. I also rattle canned a set of leaf springs which are now on the Samurai, and the paint is only coming off where the springs are abraded by the various things I drive over.

edit: Actually those leaf springs are brush paint followed by rattle can followed by clear coat.

I've thought about that... I don't have a spare oven to bake in though... or the room for one :(

I've painted plenty, without issue. The bedliner would probably work better than paint, but your colour choices would be limited.
