Why not just find a unit with a remote control. Keep the radio in the trunk and use the remote to control everything.

I dont know of a receiver that can be controlled by an iPod (wired or wireless) but there are receivers that control an iPod (which I dont think you want).
However if what you are interested in is mainly being able to play your iPod and control the volume from the iPod, this is fairly simple. Any receiver or integrated amp with an audio input will play the audio out from an iPod and since you can control the music and volume of the analog out of the iPod, from the iPod, all you have to do is set the receiver to that input and experiment with the receiver volume control until it is set where you can control it well enough with the iPod.
Also in reply to suggestions to get a receiver with a remote - most car audio receivers and head units with remotes use IR not RF and IR is sight line only so that will not work if in the trunk unless the unit also has a remote IR sensor. And then there is the issue of not being able to see what you have done. A lot of the new receivers use screen displays and menus to do most things other than control volume so having a remote without seeing the receiver isnt very helpful.
