TJ, your comment about the advertised car being the only one you wouldn't want is right-on, too!

I can't find the source now but it's rumored VW decided to phase out both the Panamera and Cayenne after the current product cycle to focus the brand on sports cars.

EVO talked to the Porsche chief at one of the recent big car shows - I never pay attention, so I couldn't tell you which one. They brought up this rumor and the response was basically "They make us lots of money, why would we stop building them?"

They will not stop making them, they will build an Audi or premium VW out of the Panamera.

Look for something like the next CC sharing this chassis.

    Oddly fitting?

I got to see two of them at SEMA, on with a wing and one without. The one without was WAY ugly but the one with the wing some how worked.

It would be intresting to do a head to head comparison with a 928 (s4 or GTS)

The GTS is the only 928 worth having IMHO. That car is the Hawtsawz!

I saw one in Wilmington not too long ago, it looked alright, much better proportioned in person.

Still, I never thought I'd have to have someone point out a new Porsche before I noticed it, but I guess when they've all looked exactly the same for the last 20 years or so they start to blend in.

Thanks to the spammer, we can reflect on our thoughts when this thing was first announced. I don't know about the rest of you, but my opinion isn't changed. I admit there are some cars which have made me think "wow that's horrid" when I saw it in pictures, and seeing it in person made me say "hmm that's not bad" - like the new 5 series. I've now seen plenty of Panameras and not only does it look ugly but without a photographer's careful touch to make it seem sporty and aggressive, it looks lame and cheap.

It reminds me of all designs of this kind and the delusional diatribe from the designers who defend it. Like when the fish Tauruses first came out, or the Bangle BMWs - they told me that I'm just resisting change, that in time, people will love them. I said it's crap, when good looking new designs came out, I was right there drooling on the velvet rope. And sure enough, the only thing that changed with time is the fish Taurus and Bangle 745 not only look like an ugly car, but they now look like an old ugly car, since the design doesn't even have the fresh wow factor.

Car design to me is like music, and Bangle is like one of those new age, experimental "artists", who takes instruments and makes random sounds with them, just to be different. Different doesn't equal better, they do intersect but sparsely, especially when you've been at it as long as we've been making music, or even as long as we've been making cars. Until you come up with a fundamentally different way to make them, without wheels, windows, lights and side doors, it's all fundamentally the same E36 M3. So why not just make a freshened version of a design that's known to be good, or a combination of them. The American makers have figured it out. I hope the Japanese and Germans will soon follow. The only car BMW got 100% right in my eyes in the recent past is the Z8 - if you agree, I rest my case.

I guess they are bringing it to the US. I just saw a commercial and they mention something about "no compromise"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

OK, so they mean other then the fact that it clearly is not a full out sports car, and they clearly have styled it after the 911, including the rear end, despite the fact that it is a front engine car!

I can't wait to see the Porsche pickup truck... hey why not at this point.

Here is a Porsche truck! Not bad looking. I'll boy one to haul my jeweleries.

It was way ugly, but I'd take one as a driver in a heartbeat. The new V6 with start-stop engine control was a great drive. One detail I loved, when you let your foot OFF the gas in stop and go traffic, it cranked back up and let you inch forward. Almost every other car I've driven with start-stop makes you put your foot on the gas first. Makes a big difference in my opinion. Plus I love the interior.

Not like I'll ever afford one.

I've seen the same one a couple times at the local Dollar Store. Apparently selling crap that cost just pennies to make and ship in from china and then selling said crap for a $1 can net you a Panamera.

I have driven them, they are a nice performance sedan. You have to be a vampire to own one, the dark of night allows you to never gaze upon their bulbously hideous proportions.

This fits into the "why all the hating?" category for me. If Porsche can subsidize their sprots cars by selling things like this, all power to them. Lookswise, i have no problem with it. It seems like the perfect family autobahn car. Too bad we don't have any autobahns

Sorry but $75k for a 300bhp V6 is horrible plus terrible styling equals a rip off in my mind. Thanks but I will take a XFR.

^^^ Same here. Saw one being unloaded yesterday from an enclosed trailer to a house where money apparently flows freely. I don't hate the way they look. I'm more opposed to the concept, but the Cayenne blew that out of the water long ago. I guess you gotta do what it takes to survive these days.

I'm still no fan of Porsche's "stretch a 911 into every body style" aesthetic. While the Panamera is certainly awkward from certain angles, the Cayenne is an abomination. It's better with the recent refresh but uggh, I have no idea how that design ever got out of the modeling shop.

Personally, I detest the whole "we have a sports car, let's make a sedan out of it!" movement, but if people buy them, more power to the manufacturers for it. The combination of laws and situation it would take to have me put this car in my driveway is almost certianly never going to happen, so it's not like I have to worry about looking at one when I get up in the morning.

CEO Matthias Mueller took the reigns at Porsche last year after serving as an executive at Volkswagen, Porsche’s new parent company.  Mueller revealed VW’s plans for its Porsche brand in an interview with Automotive News Europe:

What are your most important objectives? We want to remain the world's most profitable car manufacturer and build on this position. Read as: Heritage and authenticity take a back seat to maintaining industry-leading profits.

What are the greatest challenges facing your product strategy? Each year we want to bring a new Porsche to market. Read as: Expect more shared platforms with VW's other brands.

Can you reach the sales goal set by VW Group boss Martin Winterkorn of 150,000 units by 2015? Our objective is to have more than 200,000 units a year by 2018. Counterpoint: Porsches were once exclusive - the company built less than 20,000 cars in 1996.

What new 911 variants will there be in terms of body and drivetrain in 2012? With the 911, we are up to 22 derivatives. We use this as an example for the other models... We are planning a hybrid concept in each model line. A Porsche for every niche and every driveway?

Last year, the United States was your largest single market, followed by China and Germany. Will China overtake the United States as your largest market? I am assuming that our ranking will change. It is likely that in the short term China will become our largest market worldwide, thereby supplanting the United States. Read as: To expand sales in China, expect Porsche to focus even more attention on developing sedans, SUV’s and other volume platforms.

Will the next 911 be a sales leader? No, that's not achievable because the segment is simply not as big as an SUV or sedan segment. Read as: Sedans and SUV's have become Porsche's bread and butter. Sports car sales contribute much more to the brand's image than its bottom line.

Last year when Our Team donated driving instructions for the March of dimes Drive for babies at Road America, http://www.facebook.com/DriveforBabies, a Local dealer donated a panamera, for the celebrity driving instructor. Boris Said was at the wheel, and he would take passengers in the car (for a donation to the dimes) with 3 passengers and a pro driver that thing SCREAMED around the track, I dont care what car I was in, if I saw that thing turn the corner behind me I was already giving him a point by ;)
