Is it a bad thing when the things you used to wash/wax your vehicle come out looking like this? From D'Artagnan

Bonus question: Can you guess what color my truck is?

Judging from the amount of paint on the pads there I'm going to say your truck is primer colored now.

87 toyota pickup but at least you guys got the color right, haha. I don't think the truck has much clear coat left, except on the front fenders and most of the driver's side door. My bedsides went from a flat red to a nice semigloss red after two coats of wax.

Just keep it waxed it will stay nice once a year use NEW FINISH in the orange bottle stuff works great at keeping crappy paint nice.

I used the Meguires NXT wax this time. I did drop the almost full bottle and it did break so it looks like I'll be picking up some new stuff soon. I'll look into the NEW FINISH stuff 44Dwarf. When I wax it I kinda feel like I'm polishing a turd. Even after 2 coats of wax the paint is nowhere near smooth. The hood has all kinda of funny little spots too, like someone let bird poop sit too long and it ate the paint. I guess I can't really complain too much, I got the truck for $1500.

My wife's brand new 88 Volvo did that for the entire decade we owned it. The new owner has washed it maybe once every 5 years, so he didn't care.

So its a somewhat common red car thing? It turned my hands red too.

  • Nov. 24, 2008 8:58 a.m. CoryB Reader

There's no clear coat on it anyway based on the way the pads look. That's a single-stage paint job - the color (red) that you see is the only paint on it. Pretty common on non-metallic colors actually.

The only protection that paint has is the wax, so keep a good coat on it at all times.

Oh, and red is the second-worst color for sun fade, beaten only by yellow.
