Grassroots Motorsports and the Tire Rack are excited to announce that our driver/test team will be returning with the 2010 Mazda MX-5 for another season of SCCA Solo Street Touring R competition. Our 2010 competition success exceeded our expectations as the car and drivers delivered three Divisional Championships, two ProSolo class wins, second place overall in the ProSolo Class standings, two Tire Rack SCCA National Championship trophy positions (sixth and ninth out of 51 competitors) and the Street Touring R Ladies Tire Rack SCCA National Championship.

These results were accomplished by resisting the temptation to throw all the go-fast parts at the car at the beginning of the season. Instead, we followed a systematic approach of installing and testing the major component changes so we could share the real world gains with Grassroots Motorsports readers along the way.

Plans are already in place for more car development and product testing. These include a wet and dry extreme performance tire shootout, a brake pad comparison, further suspension changes and, by popular demand, a heavy- versus lightweight wheel track test.

Do you have additional SCCA Solo-related tests you'd like to see us perform using our MX-5 project? Please share your ideas by leaving a comment on this page.

I run an '09 Miata in STR, so articles on this project car are easily my favorite each time they appear in the magazine. Keep them coming.

I'd like to see a wet-tire shoot-out, as you mentioned. I'd also like to see more on 255s vs smaller tires and 17s vs 18s now that you've added a bit of power.
