Quickie diagnosis wanted!

Niece's 2001 Honda Civic quit running on the onramp to I-95. Crank, no start. 1.5 engine, automatic, 130k miles.

I'm thinking fuel pump. I should know more tomorrow. Any other likely candidates?

just a guess... Timing belt?

The infamous "MAIN RELAY" for the fuel injection? Usually on the drivers side firewall or lower kick panel. It is an issue on earlier civic models.

Maybe it just got tired of being passed by every car other than hummer h1 and decided enough is enough.

A quick fuel pump check is to hit the gas tank with a 2x4. If it starts then bad pump, if no start hit the fuel filter with a screwdriver handle. If it starts then plugged filter.

None of the vids I watched for Civic fuel pump replacement was relevant. I was expecting 10mm nuts. Instead I get a big plastic lockring that, needless to say, I cannot turn by hand. So instead of my usual running from the attached garage to the detached garage and back for tools, I am doing the same thing driving 10 miles each way! Gah!

Oh yeah, turns out to be a 2001 LX with the 1.7

It could happen to anyone. Few things are more embarrassing that having five guys stand under your Suburban to catch an empty gas tank.

What about crank angle or cam angle sensor?

Pull a spark plug and crank the motor. Does fuel mist blow out? If it does, then your fuel pump and related stuff is fine.

Nope! Not out of gas. (I figured the same thing and poured in a few gallons right there on the side of the highway).

Checked for voltage at the connector with the ignition on. 12 volts, so we've got juice. Pulled the wiring connector and the fuel line. Fuel line is dry, not a drop comes out. Pulled the fuel pump out of the tank and the first thing I notice is that a black wire is hanging loose. Hmmm. Well, gee. That might keep it from running, huh?

Stripped it back a little and crimped it back into the connector. Hooked it back up. Car runs.
