Is the 2.3 Ford Ranger engine a contact, or non-contact motor? My son's buddy just broke the timing belt in his truck. Thanks Warren

Non-interference. Just slap a new belt on

Vehicle is totalled, I will give him $100.00 firm for it.
In other news I will have a Ford Ranger with a new timing belt for sale soon for $2500.00

and the bonus is, they're a snap to change. A great "my first-timing belt" job.
Buy an adjustable cam gear and then it counts as maintainifying.

Weren't there a couple different 2.3L Ranger engines? What year?

I'm not sure of the year. It's an older one , I think.

I think all Rangers were non interferance. Yes a snap to change. If he turns his back long enough I need a right door, front fender and the hood. Even better if it is green. Also check out http://www.therangerstation.com/

There were 2 different Ranger 2.3 engines, the older SOHC / Pinto engine and the newer DOHC (from later 2001) Mazda engine. It's VERY hard to kill the Pinto engine...don't have experience with the Mazda engine.

basically same engine as is in my mustang. LITERALLY unkillable. love the engine...it's the transmissions that kill it's performance.

The Mazda engines are nigh impossible to kill as well. I bought my 91 Ranger with over 100k and a warped head. Replaced the head and put another 100k+ before selling it with 225k on the odometer. Replaced the head, two clutches and a transmission. Never touched the bottom end.

for the record, the 2.3 lima motor in turbocharged form can handle 30 pounds of boost in the stock bottom end :)
