Is there a reason I shouldn't remove the heater from the Yugo?

You mean, like reducing its resale value?

Considering it is going to be a Challenge car and it is a Yugo I am not to worried about that.

Joke, joke, it was a joke. Having nothing actually useful to contribute, I decided to go with cheap humour. But, wiping the idiotic grin off my face, wasn't there something on here about a Yugo that had factory air, meaning two entirely separate sets of HVAC controls? Was that yours? And, if so, does that mean there are Bad Surprises involved in trying to remove it?

If you are ever going to use it as a road car, it will be useless on cold days without a heater. I would leave it unless it will never be registered again.

I've done it to a few of my cars, all of them daily drivers, and I live up north. The cold wasn't a problem, but not having a windshield defroster was a bit of a pain.

Yes that was mine. The A/C was in the process of getting removed when I got it. And it looks like some of the wire was messed around with. I am only planning on driving it to and from autocrosses.

Did you buy this car from Ben at Classic Autos?
Does the car try to overheat? Prolly not this time of year, but what about the summer? If so, maybe try just moving the heater core into the engine bay so you do not lose any cooling ability.

As long as you don't remove the hand warmers (commonly called rear window defrost
) it should be OK. jk. Although TJ might have a point about moving it to work as auxilary cooling.
@TJ - Yes he got the car from Ben at Klassic Autos.

You are a bit of a masochist, aren't you?

I would definitely leave a heater on any challenge car I built, for the aforementioned reasons--backup cooling and defrosting the windshield. Both could be very useful in a pinch!

I have my priorities. You know it doesn't take long to get used to the cold...

Having a car with no windshield defrost sucks, that's why I wouldn't do it.

You need a defroster to see where you're going, safety first.
The added lightness of 3 lbs. would be more than off set when you go off course due to fog.

If the heater needs to be on, it's too cold to go racing.

there are always electric defrosters
If you have a locost.. caterham offers a windshield with a demister grid built into it

As said. Auxilliary radiator.

I am really tempted to remove it just because it was wired in with the A/C which is gone and wiring it back in is going to be a pain. The electric defroster is a good idea if I can find one on this side of the pond.

or order it from them and have it shipped?

At speed the blower is not always needed. The blower can be hot wired with a switch. QED.

Between the conversion rate and cost of shipping it would kinda suck for a challenge car.

Where you live, I would be surprised if the lack defroster would be a problem. For me it was a pain, but I winter drove a few cars like that.

In the old days before heaters were common, they would install a little fan on the dash that would blow on the windshield to help minimize fogging. Then, on warm days it could be swiveled around to blow on the driver.
