Saw an '87 911 3.2 Carrera Cabrio on the Porsche's for Sale section of the Pelican Parts forum for $12k that looked pretty decent last night. I do not have $12k currently and if I did I would probably be working double time to find out more about the thing. Should clean up very nicely for $15k total.

I like the Carreras but it a car from the 60s with very little changed. It some ways this is great but it is a huge change from a modern car like an RX8. And if he thought the RX8 was kind of low on power, well an '80s 911 is no faster.

I saw that one and was quite surprised that it was that cheap. I haven't got 12k either atm but I'd most likely still get a coupe if I'm buying another 911 (which requires me selling the one I've got in the UK), but that's because the shell is slightly stiffer and I'd want to build a bit of a hot rod 911.

They might not feel faster, but a '88 ROW Carrera 3.2 is still approx a 150 mph car...

A C5 Z06 would be hard to beat. A friend of mine had one, it was good enough to redeem chevy for me (I was a GM hater until I road in that monster).

The price on that one makes some of the others that show up on that section of the forum look really overpriced. I know, I know, rust never sleeps and these things can get pretty costly to fix but so can any other car, and with a G50 and Motronic it seems like a pretty sure bet. I would prefer a solid top & a sunroof since I mostly travel by motorcycle so when I can't, it's usually weather (meaning a cloth top would stay up as well) but I sure wouldn't kick that white Carrera out of my driveway if it were to magically appear there tonight.

I guess I'm just looking at this from a logical standpoint. The Rx8 is now basically left behind by everything in its class. Worst power, worst gas mileage, and it turns the worst lap times. It is definitely the most fun and involving to drive, in my opinion. The best one can realistically hope for without forced induction is about 220hp, on the higher side. I don't really need the extra power, but it would be nice to be able to effortlessly pass a v6 Camry or Altima.

Well you're definitely going to need something that runs at least mid 13s in the 1/4, then.
I have a local buddy who apparently has the highest dynod n/a renesis, or something like that. Or it was. He said it was right around 200whp iirc which lines up with your numbers.
Honestly, i would prefer an LS swapped rx8 to a vette, but that is not for strictly performance or practical reasons.
I also think a c5 is a good option here. They are fairly cheap, fairly fast, and not bad to DD.

no lie, i'm not being a Nissan homer but, Autotrader mag. had so many RX-8's on Nissan lots when the 350Z came out, it wasn't even funny.

I'm not a big fan of the 350z. The 370z fixed most of what was wrong with it, though. Too bad Mazda wasn't/can't able to work similar magic with the S2 Rx8.

This is kind of a shallow statement but I'd like an LS-powered RX8 quite a bit more if the finished product didn't look like an RX8. How the stylists got things so right with the FD and then did that to the RX8 is surprising.

Of course it has something the RX8 doesn't; torque. It FEELS much faster in normal driving. The 911 also has something else, resell. It's going up, the RX8 is still going down. I think it will be languishing with the first two gen RX7s before long. Given the 4 doors, rotary issues, and zillions made, I don't think it will offer a price jump for years.
Of course I like the RX8 and considered buying one before I bought my last car, but didn't mainly due to the poor fuel mileage and reliability issues. I liked the way it drove though. It has a great seating position and awesome handling.

Seriously you can find Maserati Coupes just under $30k. And the sound of that Italian V8 is totally worth. A guy drives one around my school and my pants get a little tighter everytime I hear it.
