It wasn't an engine problem that caused that... it was a cooling issue, and the fixes are out there. The 80k then explode fable being connected with the motors themselves, is just that.

Berate mazda for dropping the ball on the cooling. Not the motor.

I thought that issue was from putting the fuel filter where you had to drop the differential to service it, causing a lot of people to keep putting off changing it? One of the design engineers had to have caught a mechanic banging his wife to have designed things that way.

MPG is the big deal-killer for me on owning and USING an rx-8... although im still wondering why im the only person in this thread that likes the styling? I mean, i wish the taillights were more angular.. but i think its a good looking car

I thought they blew their apex seals, pretty much the way all rotaries let go. I will admit that I am a little biased because I had an '84 with failed apex seals at 80K.

Wow, it's really unusual to hear of an unboosted engine dieing at 80k... My last Rx7 (2nd gen non turbo) got traded @ 235k with good compression..

I'm sad to see it go, but I can understand why. I love the styling and I love owning one, but they're really not for everyone.

I love the fact that last weekend I went to an autocross with my wife, a friend and our 3 month old baby in my car that I used to beat up on Miatas and the like. I've never driven a better drivers' car than the 8. It really does fit my lifestyle perfectly.

That said, bring on the 16X ALREADY!!!!!!!!
