Real magnesium wheels are really cool. And astonishingly lite weight.. I have a set of late 50's real Magnesium wheels cast by Halibrand for Troutman and Barnes. INDY car mechanics who made both the Scarab and the Chaparral MK1
They weigh so little I need to tie them down to keep them from floating into space
Don't let neigh-Sayers tell you to throw them away out of fear of cracks.. The Navy slams 30,000+ pound aircraft onto the deck from 130+ MPH with magnesium wheels and often those same magnesium wheels go to the aircraft junk yard 30+ years later. Mine are more than 60 years old and free of cracks.

Oddly enough, we looked into doing our wheel centers on this year's FSAE car out of AZ31B magnesium, and not only was it prohibitively expensive ($500+ per wheel in materials) it was stiffer with a minor weight penalty (or could be designed as such) to use aluminum.
