    Here is the deal.

My Saturn is a 1999. The engine is 1998.

1999 Saturn has all the air-pump nonsense and the exhaust manifold has a flange/hole for the air pump tube to hook into it. Its a 9 bolt flange as well.

The 1998 engine has no air-pump flange/hole. The car it came out of had no air-pump at all. It has a 5 bolt flange.

So I put the 1998 engine back into the car and was planning on putting the 1998 exhaust manifold and the 1998 engine. Easy right. But was do i do with the air pump system?

ProDarwin wrote this in my build thread.

    Remove air pump #1

    Remove air pump #2

    I dont get it exactly.

Any other input or help getting me around this?

    Thanks

If you just take the AIR system off (or not hook it up at all in your case), your ECM will freak out and throw codes. I don't quite get those threads either, they seem to say a 2000 ECM will fix it? That doesn't really make sense. You can either see if a dealer will 'reflash' your ECM for you, or replace your ECM with one from another car. Right around 1999 and 2000 everything got really hazy with the ECM situation, Saturn switched from Bosch to Motorola ECMs mid-year 1999, so I'm not exactly sure what year ECM you'd need. If it were me, I'd try a 1998 one, but maybe it wouldn't play nice with the other computers in the car. Hopefully some of the other Saturn guys can shed some light on this for you.

Isnt there that Saturn place on St.Clair avenue? Maybe pop over there and see if they could have a solution for you? Might be worth a shot...

    What I understand is this:

If you currently have a 3rd gen PCM (which I am 95% sure you do), what you need to do is switch to a 3rd gen PCM w/o air (according to the P/N in the thread). Then throw the AIR system in the trash.

I don't believe there are any 2nd gen PCMs that work with an air system, so if the car has a 2nd gen PCM, you should be fine. Throw the AIR system in the trash.

The only reason this is confusing is because '99 is such a bastard year for PCMs and Engines. If you post this same question on SaturnFans or Sixthsphere, I'm sure someone can answer the question fairly easily.

    1. Could i reflash it to have it deleted from the system? Or is a scan tool enough to turn it off.

I would suggest stop posting about it.

Re-flashing a module to not run an emissions control device that was originally installed on your car is called Tampering.

And it's one thing for an owner to tamper with his car, it's a completely different story when a dealer does it. Goes from plain old ilegal to one that can be easily prosecuted.

    here's the law- http://www.epa.gov/fedrgstr/EPA-AIR/1997/October/Day-27/a28368.htm

IIRC if you have a 3rd Gen a reflash is possible although not legal under federal law. The reflash would be to the VIN of a car w/o air.

I work at a dealership. Could i reflash it myself to have it deleted from the system? Or is this a Tech2 enough to turn it off.

IIRC if you have a 3rd Gen you can just reflash. You need to get the VIN# of a car w/o air

Like I suggested- stop posting, and delete your posts.

this is a way that you can easily be fired for. And this thread is evidence.
