I have owned 6 sciroccos since 2005, my first car being a 1987 16v.
The platform is a good base for modifications, as it is on the rabbit chassis (as already mentioned). The car does not take to bumps as well as the A2-up cars, and the "point of no return" in regards to spinning out in a corner is a bit harder to recover from than an A2.
Since you have an 85, you have the 12 gallon tank, space saver spare tire well, 9a trans (less ideal ratios when compared to the 83-84 4k trans) 100mm axles. Manual steering was a bit less common after the late 84's, and sunroofs were more common. I had my early 84 down to 2040lbs with a full interior after I did the AC delete. The 8v chassis is a bit lighter due to the lack of the aero add-ons and optional bits that usually came with the 16v. The core support on the 8v is also a lot less prone to crack than the 16v because of the hole size for the airbox inlet.
Your (non) running issues could very well be from varnished gasoline in the fuel system. Check lines, accumulator, BOTH fuel pumps (late 84-up had a transfer and an in-line), fuel pump relay. You can also have non-starting from the ground strap coming loose from the front motor mount due to worn side mounts. Also invest in a bentley manual. the $60 you spend on the manual will pay for itself tenfold.
The worst thing for any old VW like that is for it to sit. it raises all kinds of hell with the fuel system, and water leaks in the cabin through the fresh air inlet, courtesy of the rain tray drain hole being plugged with leaves and dirt.
