I'm trying to do a model for a drag race simulation for class and I was wondering whats an average shift delay value from going from 1st to 2nd or 2nd to 3rd on an automatic transmission. I've figured about half a second, but I was wondering if this was too large a value?

Pretty much no delay, it's why automatics are so popular with drag racers.

Sounds slow. Just checked some datalogs and I'm making shifts in .3-.4sec (using clutch, lifting gas, etc) with a 5sp manual trans. I would think an automatic would be half that or less.
imo it depends on the transmission and what's done to it, as well. some transmissions take forever and some don't. seems like it'd be about a quarter second with a decent one with a shift kit, haven't ever raced an auto though and don't have telemetry to tell me how long i take with my 5 speed lol

Just don't granny shift it, and make sure you double clutch it like you should and you'll be fine.
If you are talking like a full manual VB automatic, you are probably looking somewhere in the .05-.1 sec range. Yes, it is that quick. The perception is longer because of the motor rpm change which takes a little bit longer.
This is one of the reasons powerglides are very popular in drag racing. There is only one gear change "to slow you down". But now with all the "limited HP" max effort NA classes out there, 3 spds are increasing in popularity because the rpm drops are less and keeps the rpms up for a lower ET and more MPH.

So I've set up my simulation with a Powerglide with a shift kit. Would the times be comparable then to a full vb automatic?
