    When you shift into 5th nothing happens, like it isn't even there. You can put it into reverse, but as soon as you start moving it whines and grinds like it's going to explode. The speedo is inop. The alternator doesn't charge. And the timing chain makes noise like that's it's job. Other than that it's pretty sweet for only having 226k miles.

    At least they made the same basic truck for about 80 years so there should be plenty of transmission donors out in the yards...

    you know you'd think that, but car-part.com shows fairly limited interchange between years. Now I realize they only show results that are exactly the same, not stuff that's different but will still work, but it would be cool if someone could tell me for sure what else will go in. Those exactly-the-same trannys are kinda pricey.

    My last free truck was an '86 Isuzu P'up. This is a great improvement.
