... where the blazes does one start looking for one?
Autotrader.com shows one in CO as the closest, Bimmerforums.com shows one in SoCal (but that's an autotragic) and I think that's pretty much it.
I know they're rare, but if someone on here knows about a secret stash of them, I'd be all ears. Oh, and given that this is GRM we're of course talking E30 here.
BTW, did they ever import the E34 AWD version (525ix?) into the US?

Now the bit with the nationwide search is really useful to know - I've been using craiglook quite extensively here because the local choice of vehicles isn't that great, but I didn't know about the way to search the whole country. Thanks!
We have people here close enough and smart enough to check out the Milwalkee car. Member named SlickDizzy should be close but you might have to beat him off with a stick to not buy it from under you.
The trouble with the Milwaukee car is that it doesn't appear drivable as is, so I'd either have to get it repaired locally or get it shipped out here...
I've just put a wanted ad onto Bimmerforums, let's see if anything crawls out of the woodwork there.

Maybe iC convertibles, but no iX convertibles.
BMW made the best damn AWD car and never told anyone - my friend and fellow GRMer Roy who owns not one but two E30 325iXes. This coming from a guy that drove around 80s Audi Quattros.
Rust is a major issue. e30tech seems like a good place to find them. I really wish Roy and I weren't too damn busy to catch up as I was going to baby sit one of the cars while he spends the next year in McMurdo.

Yes, I know they rust nicely - I gave up searching for an E30 in the UK because most of them were seriously grotty. Even in Germany you never saw many iXs, there were a few I saw in the Alps when these were current but I don't think they were a big success for BMW.
i do occasionally see ix's, E30s that is, around d.c. We have probably one of the highest concentrations of foreign cars here, especially German.
It looks like a half decent one has turned up in LA (via bimmerforum), although I'm expecting to haggle somewhat on the price as it does need some work. Closest one so far, though.
Anyway, would it be a really bad idea to take one on the track as an occasional HPDE car? Am I likely to break the AWD system that way?

Going out on a limb here, but assuming its anything like an N/A Subaru thats awd, it will be slow and understeer even more than a fwd car. This may not make it as fun as you think.

That looks like a pretty nice car (from the limited photos) so the price is probably fair. A stock iX will be slower than an iS, and it will understeer more, but they take a different driving style. By all means send me the links to the CL ads, but the 2 door would have to be be cheap enough and good enough to warrant shipping cross-country.
Some of the parts are NLA or horrendously expensive, if you plan on modding it all, I'd just start with an i or is.
www.r3vlimited.com is another good place for sale ads.
Shipping cross country? Plane tickey + marathon drive back is much more fun. That's what I did with the E30 I bought in November, Newark, NJ to Tulsa, OK in about 27 hours (I stopped in St Louis to sleep)

I didn't look to see where you were, sorry. I drove the 2 door car from Albany, NY to Raleigh when I bought it. I'm not sure either car is worth shipping cross country. I bought them for a rallycross project, but both needed so much work I've not been able to race either one. I've got one about safe to drive at this point in time, but I've decided my Forester XT is all the AWD I need in Raleigh, so I'm in the market for an M3 of some sort now.

I haven't got enough holiday this year for doing something like that and my wife pretty much has no holiday at all, so that's out.
Get on plane Friday afternoon, arrive home Sunday afternoon.
No "holiday" as you Europeans' call it. Here in the states we call it "vacation."
I've been thinking of selling mine, but it's a stripped out track car. No rust though.
