For some reason it really agervated me. It is like telling Tim Suddard that in order to improve GRM he should get a better publisher. I will decide tomorrow if I want to quote him in his own thread. It is the least I can do. The love-in going on over there needs a reality check. Just not sure if it is worth the effort.

You're really letting the poor kid get under your skin! I'm sure he was just trying to be helpful without any intended disrespect. And to be fair, you ARE getting awfully defensive about it...

My only comment would be that you should wait until you are actually in the car and driving it before you start thinking about mods. I've planned $5k+ builds before I actually got in a given car, drove it, and realized it didn't need 3/4 of the crap I thought it would to drive/handle right. And then there is always the chance something else fails. I know this is GRM and everything, but it sucks to drop $2000 on performance parts only to have it puke up another part the next day and make you wish you had waited.

As I said before money is really not a concern and I separate need from want. If something needs to be fixed you do it. Wants and there cost are a separate thing all together. If I was worried about this stuff I would not have got a jag not a car for the faint of wallet

As for driving them I have driven them. I like how they drive in stock form but I would like a bit more of a euro feel to it. Just a little tighter. Why I was thinking progressive springs. It would keep the nice ride for day to day driving but tighten it up a bit when you get on it in an off ramp.

With respect to the kid. If he was not trying to disrespect me then what was he doing. I am the only driver of my car. Hence forth it is a backhanded way of saying I am a suck driver. So ya I am a bit annoyed. Fifteen year old boys that insult you need to be escorted to the door and helped through it with a swift kick in the backside. If they want to come back and play they had better be on there best behavior.

How much of that cushy JAAAG ride are you willing to give up to get a lighter feel?

The only real way I know of getting a lighter feel is by lightening the car. It's easy to get carried away but if your careful I'm sure you could drop some weight and still retain 90% or so of the day to day comfort. And it wouldn't even cost anything but time.

What does an awd x-type weigh anyway?

Keep this in mind. Any time someone asks for mod advice on this forum, every third post is about improving the driver before the car. (And to be fair, even the pros still practice like mad to improve themselves. I don't think there's a person on this board who would say they have reached 100% of their driving potential, there is always room to improve. Maybe you should be racing F1 cars if you're that good ) Kids repeat what they hear. He saw a post about someone looking for mod advice and suggested improving the driver before the car. I think you're WAY over-thinking his intent and assuming maliciousness where simple ignorance is to blame. Maybe tell the kid to think before he speaks and explain your view, but it takes a special kind of adult to go out of his way to crap all over a kid to prove a point. He's 15, he has an excuse to be a bit daft. I should know. I joined this board when I was 14, more than a decade ago! I also repeated what I heard ad infinitum to the point of pissing people off, but I was lucky enough to have people calmly explain to me why I was being an asshat instead of people aggressively coming to shut me down. I might still be an asshat but at least I'm a self-aware one now thanks to a bunch of patient GRMers.

I am old school. Touchey feely ain't my style. Ignorance on his part does not excuse his actions. Like most boys his age give them an inch and the quickly get to big for there shorts. This has been accelerated by all the fawning over him in his thread. Since you seem to be more in tune with him maybe you would be the better person to handel this.

I have decided to let this go. Instead I will sit and wait for him to piss off the thousand lb gorilla in the room and then watch the gorilla peal him. Like a banana

I will have to look up the weight but I think it is just a tad over 3000 lbs. I agree with you that messing with the suspension tightness is like walking on a knife edge. I am not looking for 3 series like handling or ride quality. Somthing more like a 5 series would be nice. This is comming from a guy that DDed a race prepared Porsche for 10 years. If I ran over an earth worm in that car I could tell what sex it was.

Hey, if you feel the need to call him out, have at it. I just remember being a kid too, and considering how few young people even feel the need to have a car or even learn to drive these days, we don't need to scare anyone off! The fawning is a bit much I agree but that's kind of everywhere on this board these days, regardless of poster or age. It seems to me like much of the old guard is long gone or barely posts anymore, which is surely part of it.

Also, as the saying goes, check yourself before you wreck yourself. The last Jaguar guy on this board was banned for going out of his way to pick a fight, don't be the next one!

I think we've been here close to the same amount of time and you are right, things have changed from the way they used to be. A lot of people have sort of disappeared on us. I really don't see anyone fawning over him but it is kind of rare to get someone new that seems to have a little bit of a clue, especially that young. What I see is several older, more experienced guys trying to point a young guy in the right direction. And I can't fault anyone for that. I know when I was 14 or 15 I would never have made it here. If it wasn't a V8 and RWD it was junk, lol.

Anyway back on point the reason I originally came here to post was to say I got some good news today. After trying to put the jag up on the lift at the shop I found the driveline locked up. Further investigation and i have determined that transfer case is the problem. The trans appears to be fine. A much easier fix. Not sure if I am going to keep the low mileage trans I got for it. Wife thinks I should keep it just in case. I am going to pull the transfer case tomorow to confirm my diagnosis and then see about locating another one. The other good thing is if it is the transfer case I wont have to have the TCM put in to adaptive mode and then re train the new trans. Really glad as I was going to have to take a half day off to get it done.

Sorry, I didn't mean to offend you. I didn't know about your experience with vehicles, and I spoke a bit hastily. To answer a few questions:

1: Yes, I realize that I can't drive yet. However, I do have experience with cars so please don't write me off.

2: My Cutlass is more of a restoration project than anything

3: I'm more of a Forza guy because of the sounds. Cars are visceral experiences and GT6 is not.

I'd likely hold on to the trans just in case. Does the TC share any fluids with the transmission? Anyway, iirc the trans are kind of a weak link on them, I'd hate to sell it and then a month later have to go looking for another one.

I am going to keep the trans. It guarantees that the one in the car will last for another 100k.

The transfer case and the trans don't share fluids. One bolts to the other. It us actually a cool bit of packaging they came up with.

The amoying part is last week there were a bunch of transfer cases on car-parts.com. Now all I can find are really high millage ones or way overpriced ones. The biggest issue is that nin are close by. I don't mind paying the premium for a supper low mileage one but add shipping on that and it gets nuts. As in more than I paid for the whole car nuts.

The little voice in my head is whispering forced induction. I would love to but I don't think the driveline would take it with out significant mods. If I found an xtype with a blown up motor and transmission I would love to make it RWD. Not sure of what motor would fit as the one in it is transfers v6. There is a tunnel of sorts to that end of things works. We will see. It wont be my current car it is way to nice to hack up.

I have one of these. 2.5 5 speed. Check the lower control arms on the rear end. The bushings tend to go bad and you'll start eating through rear tires at an alarming rate. Also, I was under the impression that the early transfer case was the one to have because of the viscous coupling. Mine was phenomenal in the snow, I couldn't believe it first time out. The later ones were open diffs and became one wheel wonders when traction got limited. To fill the damn thing I had to tilt the car way over to the side, screw in a long plastic hose and have a buddy push in as much fluid as he could from the other end then try to quickly switch in the plug. Gear oil everywhere. The headlight adjusters frequently break and then your illuminating the top of the bumper. People suggest glueing them back together or filling the housings with foam. Don't do these things! Instead drill a hole through the outside housing and then drive a screw into the inside housing that holds the bulb. Bam, new adjusters. Also the air filter on this car seems to suck in more junk than any other car I've owned, might want to check it a bit more frequently. Sweet little motor with variable valve timing, variable intake runners, and coil on plug. Very different from its Ford cousin in my mercury. Ignition coils cross reference with a Toyota btw. Most suspension at the front from the contour. I put 225s on the stock 16 rims and the springs from the sport model (stiffer and inch lower than standard) it seemed to have really improved the handling. I also threw new bushings at it but as most of the old ones were in good shape, couldn't tell the difference. I regret not ordering a better break pad online. The parts store options were terrible but I couldn't wait. Fun little cars you can grab on the cheap. Good luck with yours.
