It was designed to be a Chump car, it would get destroyed in the Challenge. There are some super fast cars that compete and this thing won't hold a candle to them. I wasn't sure what the stock rearend could handle so I tried to choke off the motor to limit power.

I'm way behind on documenting it but there's a few write ups with more pictures here.

    Link is a 404.

Stock rear end on a chevette according to most sources holds to about 120 hp before you start twisting shafts. This is from guys who drop V6s into the Chevette.

A stronger bolt in can be found in the Isuzu Impulse (First gen, "JR"). But them things are rare, and someone might shank you for breaking one to improve a chevette....

Otherwise....it becomes a hack job of making your own suspension and swapping in a different axle. I've seen everything from S10 rear ends with leaf springs, to custom and wild 5 links to: Swapping in an E30 IRS. Yes, the Chevette frame rails are perfectly aligned to accept the E30's design. The problem becomes mounting the diff itself. The swap I saw was fairly bodged together with the trunk floor cut out, and some skimpy tubes strung between the wheel wells. But it can be done.

87 & earlier non-turbo for the torque tube rear. 84 & earlier I-mark has same configuration.

I'm stripping and crushing one of my 88 turbos and I feel like shanking myself

    props on the DSM Vette

People judge the challenge by the top 10-15. The reality is things slow down drastically outside the top 15. Nutso builds are always welcome and celebrated.

I think it is damn cool. And the Vauxhall is the Chevette we should have gotten here in the US.. not the weaksauce one we got that was "punishment" for not buying a bigger car

Who judges the challenge? Who are these people?

    In reply to ScottRA21:

Amendment; after reading more on the axle and remembering the situations where the shafts were twisting, it was mostly because the people with the V6s were drag racing, and doing hard launches.

From circle track guys, the rear end can take quite a bit more power than 120. Especially if you remove the crush sleeve and use shims for pinion depth and preload.

I got a chuckle from this!

We figure this whole ensemble is good for at least 20 ponies to the wheels, thus almost doubling the power of the 1.6 liters of fury this car is packing. If we’re feeling brave we may slap some stickers on there to add a bit more top end power.

Well, we raced the car at the Chump Car championship invitational race in the car. It went pretty well, the car finished 19th out of 47 after running all 25 hours. Link to in car video with a more detailed write up.
