Osterkraut's is in San Antonio, at least for the next little while, until he is assigned to a new USAF base. A few more goodies and in the same general price range. It is a manual transmission.
Congrats! I would echo an e39 wagon. Car seats are big! and a major pita. We bought a p5 when we had our daughter. We spent the first year with the seats pushed up really so we could fit a rear facing car seat. It was too small. A friend of mine just bought a 99 528it. It has way more room and only cost about $1000 more than our p5 in similar condition and mileage. I really want one now. As far as towing goes, they aren't rated to tow much here, but the same cars in europe are rated to tow decent amounts (3-4500lbs).

Now kids and cars I know somthing about. Simple get a car that works for the kids and make it sporty. Even if it is a minivan. Yes seriously. You an always get a cheap sports car beater as a 3rd car but trust me as the kids get older you will want bigger. Sporty car that is a pita to transport kids versus a car that makes dealing with the kids easy and fun? IT is a no brain-er. Why do you think Mimi vans are so popular?
I would borrow a car seat form some place and try putting it in something. Then think feet and legs. Most small mid sized cars will not work with car seats and a kids that has any kind of legs on them. The 190E I had was a prime example. It looked like it had a back seat up until you have to put a car seat in it.
The sliding doors of a fan are so much better than trying to maneuver a kids and a car seat into a car in a parking lot. Ohya and you have to be able to carry a stroller and all the other stuff that goes with the first kid. By the third you carry nothing except a handy wipe from the local Chinese takeout.

I would love to have the extra space of the e39 wagon as opposed to my e46 wagon. And the 528iT came in manual transmission as well. Bonus!

Maybe even a hemi-fied Magnum wagon. Not really a fan...but it might fit the bill. Don't know if you could find an SRT8 for 20K though.

You're being much, much to kind on the P71 declaring it a "muscle car." Unless you're talking mid to late 70's muscle with their anemic engines and jelly-filled pillow handling.
man really.... i think the wrx wagon might be the final choice. However if i can afford an sti i might go with that.

I'll second that. A buddy of mine has an E36 325i. I have helped him with the odd repair job here or there. The oil change was the easiest I've seen on any modern era car. Brakes were pretty easy too. I was also surprised at how much room there is to work on it. Like all other brands, they have undoubtedly become more complex and more difficult to service at home, but I was extremely impressed.
Interesting as I have been facing a similar circumstance. I now have a grandson approaching a year old and have two 2-seaters, plus the wife's CRV, so I'm gonna have to do something soon.
My short list is: IS300 (all Supra stuff is almost a bolt on and I know a lot about them, wagons are available too) E46 BMW (have BMW experience too, best driving) WRX (owned an Impreza wagon in the past, somewhat fragile compared to the others in my experience, but love the boxer motor) G35 (nice driving sedan)
I'm likely to keep both the Miata and 240Z, so the toys are covered. I've been leaning towards the IS300 or BMW as they are more comfortable daily drivers, but I recently had a blast in a 700hp STi and it was awesome if somewhat uncontrollable. Can you say torque steer from all four wheels?
I suppose the BMW might win, but the IS300 would be by far the lower maintenance and costly of the two. Besides, my wife the BMW the best and that means a lot.
