I posted a while back about Ebay steering wheels. I was convinced by the replies that I should stay away from them.
I have a Momo Competition wheel in my CRX. I'm currently rebuilding our civic with my twin boys, and it will be their car to drive when done. Of course, they want the same wheel that I have, but it's a pretty expensive wheel. So I'm looking for something they'll like that also won't break the bank. Lecarra and Sparco are also too expensive, and we already ruled out Grants (they just don't like any of them).
SO! My question is, are there any other "goog" wheels "similar" to my Momo that aren't junk but also don't cost $200? What is your experience?

I just bought a nice condition, used Momo with horn button and adapter for $100 + shipping. Maybe have them haunt the classifieds?

    In reply to Duke:

Where did you find it? I haven't been able to find any good wheels used.

All my wheels have been used Ebay finds. Just have to keep an eye out.

    +1

I just got an almost perfect Momo Monte Carlo for my 911 off ebay for $65

Old Volvos came stock with something very close - like a cross between the MC and the Competition. Often you can pick them up for much less. IIRC I snagged one for my E30 for something like $40 with some scratches/cig burns in the leather. 5 minutes with some saddle soap and shoe polish and it was like new.

Craigslist for one... use Jaxed.com, or tempest to search nationwide

I bought a vintage nardi from Yahoo Japan... I paid $40 for the wheel, and $100 to get it from Japan to Oregon.

I posted a descriptive WTB ad at www.miata.net and had a hit within 24 hours. The guy gave a description and sent me 3 or 4 good pictures. He asked for a fair price and I accepted without dickering because it was just about what I was expecting to pay, or maybe a little better.

Okay, I'm going to start looking at used wheels. But getting back to the original question, are there any other brands of wheels that are good quality but cheaper than the brands I listed above?

I still think momo is your best bet, just get a used one. Used momos are cheap enough (I had one for a while i paid $15 for), that I dont think you can get much cheaper than that.

I concur I have bought several used Momo off Ebay and had pretty good luck with them.

I also vote for used. I got this old school Dino wheel on Ebay for $25 and I love it. (Sorry I don't have a better pic.)

I found a JDM Mazdaspeed 360mm steering wheel for my FC for $120. I think it was made by Momo. Shipping hurt, but the wheel is very nice and was legal for stock-class autocross (stock steering wheel on an '87 FC is a bus-like 380mm!).

Nardi and Personal are also good steering wheels- Nardis tend toward old-school styling while Personals are more modern-looking. Used ones should be about the same prices as used Momos.

I've purchased several cheap nardis from Japan via Ebay. Highly skeptical each time. But each time I've been thrilled with the wheel.

It's sometimes more expesnive to get a hub adapter than the wheel itself! (Often cheapest to buy an Grant hub and then a Grant-Nardi adapter)

Thanks guys. My kids still like my Momo Competition the best, so I guess I'll stick with finding that or a similar used one. Thanks again.
