I'm moving int my new shop, Horay! I need your ides for storage. Particularly shelves for both the crap your wife wants to keep and for parts from cars in various stages of dissasembly and tire racks too. Pictures if you got-em.

Pallet racking is cheap, and you can climb on it to put things up high.
Think "maximizing the cube" and utilize all of your space vertically as well as horizontally with heavy duty industrial shelving. Craigslist is your friend here. I managed to get a boat load of steel shelving (more than I had initial use for, actually) for less than $200.
Plastic milk crates are the bees knees for storage of longer term items. They are stackable, durable, and free assuming you have no issues with petty larceny.

I built wooden shelves out of 2x4s and 0.5" plywood in my garage. The top shelf is 10 feet high (13" ceilings) and is great for stuff that I don't need but can't get rid of. That rack is anchored to the cinderblock wall to keep it from tipping over. I also built a tire rack out of the 2x4s. If you do that, make sure you extend the verticals up high enough to keep the tires in place on the top shelf. No, I didn't. And I had to scab on some scrap to do that later.
