    I looked at a '98 Legacy awd 2.2l manual.
It will need a clutch and no proof of timing belt so that leads me to ask...
How many hours for a clutch or how many dollars to have a clutch replaced in a shop?

How many hours or dollars for a timing belt in a shop. ?

Book seems to be in the ~6hr range for Subaru clutches, 2.5-3hrs for a timing belt, $70(extreme low)-120(extreme high)hr depending who you go to.

If the car is nice enough to warrant the work, consider doing both yourself at home if at all possible. Parts will be under $500, and it's super easy to haul the engine out of these. Maybe do some "while you're in there"s like headgaskets, hoses, intake and exhaust manifold gaskets, lower engine mounts, etc. It'd be a great driver(seriously, there is no sensible daily like a 2.2 Legacy) for years to come.

Thanks for the answers. So, at retail it looks like $1500 for clutch job and $500 for belt job. I will use these numbers when negotiating.
