You don't HAVE to get an SUV. If you are willing to do a little towing preparation to the vehicle, the older LTDs aren't far from being able to tow that. If you can find one that came with the tow package, it's already rated for 5000lbs. My car/trailer setup is about 3500# total. And believe me, I have NO problems towing this car. I've also gotten as high as 14mpg while towing as well, usually it's 12-13. Granted I have a good bit of performance mods as well though. 5.0L HO, dyno'd 195 to the wheels so it's not a lot, but more than stock, 3.55 rear gear, and I've also done a manual trans conversion. If you do a tune up on the stock engine, and get a 3.73 rear gear it should be good to go as far as driveline. Stiffer rear springs, and some better shocks and your suspension will be good. Brakes are fine if you get some nice pads, but there are also options for upgrading the brakes as I have.

LTD or Grand marquis Wagon would be cool too. The wagon could at least carry more in the way of spares or camping equipment

Not to mention that any Series III that hasn't got a V8 in it will still drink for England, especially when towing, and will be overtaken by someone with a horse and buggy.

2.7l twin turbo, 6 speed, AWD. Drives like a car with the ground clearance of a truck. I'm not sure what it's towing capacity is, but I would think it would do alright.

Willys station wagon with v8 conversion - classic, quirky, but there's parts around if you dig a little. Full size bronco is good to go. Early broncos are cool, but the wheelbase is a little short to make it a good tow vehicle - esp. if they're lifted).

Claims a towing capacity of 3300lbs

More than I would have thought but still may be a bit short for car and trailer.

I'd second the full size jeep, or if you have no need for a 4wd vehicle, I'd say go with a full size wagon (Caprice, Custom Cruiser, Road Master) (Just watch for sagging air ride suspensions)

You can buy a nice truck for less then it would take to fix ANYTHING on that car when it breaks.

I'd like to throw in another vote for a 3-door Suburban. There's just something cool about them.

How about an old ambulance? Plenty rugged for even heavy towing duties. Lots of cabinets for tools and spare parts and such. And if you break your car and have to fix it overnight, lots of work lights built in.

Or just score a P71 and throw a hitch on...

    There usually a wiring nightmare

fits all your bills... quirky: name, shape, function, and manufacturer... towage: your 2000 lbs upside-down, underwater, covered in mud, dragging an angry grizzly bear behind it... taste: look at that Blazer you listed and show me a difference besides a red paint job, cause I can't see one...

    enjoy

hahaha.. a 404 unimog tow vehicle.... a 404 trans will not hold and that little 6 popper will be wheezing all the live long day.

Unless you need 4 wheel drive stay away from an suv. A van or station wagon will do a better job and get better mileage.

theres a reason why it hasn't been done..... I'll let you figure out why.

edit: sorry except for a very few minor wacko's there is a reason why it hasn't been done....
