I would never ever, ever, (EVER) buy a used car without looking underneath. Look for signs of rust and/or collision repair. Bring a jack if you need to and dress accordingly.

my methods have been covered in here pretty well :)... befriending the seller is most common (most cars I buy are bought from or found by car buddies)
