Greater weight.

Umm no. The MR2 is at least 200lbs heavier.

If I remember correctly, my '74 was around mid 1,900's, and I never did get my IT MR2 down to the 2,375lb minimum.

On weights: My '89 MR2 (NA, with AC and sunroof) weighs about 2400; my friend's '74 X1/9 weighed just under 1900 at Nationals in 2002 the first day, 1850 with the passenger seat removed the second day. This was an E Mod car ( ported, injected 13B rotary on the FIAT 4-speed) with no front and rear bumpers, but other than that, it had the full stock interior and was driven daily - carpets, radio, the works, no serious lightening. We were the only EM car that year with license plates. We got our butts kicked, but we expected that, we just went for the experience, which I would recomment to everyone, a bucket list must-do for this board. So an early stock X should be right around 1900. A 180 hp X is a blast, but far from easy to do.

Because X1/9 > MR2

As a fellow board member, who I was talking to and has owned both said the X1/9 is more fun the MR2 is faster.

I would get a X1/9 if I could find one..... the ones I do find that are in a good condition seem to be around $5k and I RARELY see them. I can get a MR2 in really good condition for pennies. I've seen them around here for 2-3k in very good running order. A x1/9 at that price seems like it would be a lot of work.

If I could find one of these mythical X1/9s with a honda engine or a fiat twin cam that people build and never seem to sell......

1900#? That's pretty awesome. I guess it's a choice between power-70's interior and ├╝ber-80's interior!

that is a great looking car.

I think foreign bumpers were different as with most Japanese cars i would start looking there.

Looks like a standard JDM bumper with the lip from some body kit on it in place of the stock one.

That is a stock mr2 upper with an aftermarket 180sx bumper mounted at the lower. There's an old Japanese mag write up about that car floating around the internet.

lol when I was googling MR2 turbo builds I saw this exact one I think, or a setup very much near it with that same intercooler even.

Though I never drove one I even think that laster MR2 is still the answer, not just AW11. W30 MR2s in fact may be just as much of an answer or more so than this.

You have 140hp in a 2100-2200lb chassis. More power and lighter weight than the AW11, much ligther than most t bar AW11s. On any Spyder enthusiast forum there always seems to be the fact that 1/3 of the W30s for sale also have the 160-190hp 2ZZ engine swapped in as well.

These AW11s it seems you can get for sub-$2000 if you want a good but not perfect car. The W30 seems to be $5k-$10k and a 2ZZ swap doesn't seem to increase it's price. Maybe MR2 is entirely the answer if you have less than $10k to spend?

I've never driven a W30 so I don't know how they are at all but it seems if I want a AW11 but newer and in better condition that I would want to buy that car. How are they compared to the AW11?

I really enjoyed mine, I tore it down to the bare block and did a complete engine rebuild back in college

I sold it back to the guy I bought it from, and he transformed it into this...

The W30 is very similar to the AW11, and a bit better in every way.

Except for one - it doesn't look anywhere near as cool

I like the aw11 over the 3rd gen for a couple reasons, hardtop, cargo space, and that awesome 80s interior :).
