...you tear it apart and drill a bunch of holes in it, right?

Mounted the ham radio and the pistol safe in the F150.

New vehicle interiors are like legos. Everything just snaps together.

I was expecting this to be a fill in the blank thread.  My answer is always “until you get some road head in it.”

Which radio?  I’d love to move up from a handheld.

Burnout was gonna be my answer too.  Decades ago it would have been "until you've done the ton in it".

I'm currently running a Tytera TYT-7800. It's a cheap Chinese knockoff of a Yaesu unit. Its dual band (2m,70cm) but theres a quad band version that's more popular, the 9800.  I've been pretty happy with it and get good reports on sound and transmit quality. I did have an issue with flaking out when I was using it as a local repeater with my HT but restarting it fixed it.

Be aware, the FCC is cracking down on the imported radios because so many are not correctly certied. Not going to drag up the details here, but Google and read before purchasing.

You've got to christen it both front and rear (seats) before it's truly yours.

I don't agree. I've definitelty done burnouts in cars that aren't mine.

Just make sure to turn off the seat AC first if you have it!

+3  Note: If this offends your sensibilities, you may also liberally sprinkle McDonald's fries under the seat for a similar aroma.  (BTW - is that normal or should I see a doctor?)

If that's the case, then all of my cars aren't mine. I haven't done a burnout in decades.

I was going to say the same thing. For me, it doesn't feel like its mine if I owe money on it

It occurred to me I didn't post any pics of the finished install. Just to prove I can put stuff back together once I take it apart....

Control face and remote speaker are mounted to the center dash tray. If I decide to remove them I can put the rubber liner back in to hide the holes. I have a mic extension on the way so I can run it out the bottom of the dash instead of it hanging down.

And the main unit is under the drivers seat

The antenna cable runs out the vent in the back wall of the cab and up to a magnet mount 1/4 wave antenna on the roof.  The antenna looks like crap so I've ordered a half wave setup that will mount in the stake pocket on the cab.

Nice setup.  So you're happy with that radio?  I've been looking for a dual band mobile for our Bronco, and that looks like a good value.  I'm not big into HAM stuff, but I am licensed and find real radios much more useful than CB.  I would mostly be using it for comms on group off-road trips.  I've got a couple of the Baofeng HTs and have been very pleased with the performance for the $$...

I'm curious if the 7800 is unrestricted in transmit freqs like the Baofengs?  That's come in very handy for me a few times at work where I've used the Baofengs as a backup radio.

I do like the radio. It is like the Baofeng HTs, I even use the same software to program it. That frequency cross over is the very thing that the FCC is cracking down on. I would never transmit outside my license but receiving on those freqs can be handy.

I'd love to see a company make a mobile unit that could be type approved for ham use in one frequency range and also be type accepted for GMRS use as well. But the details of the regs pretty much kill it.

Thanks!  I'll put one of those on my list...

I hear ya on FCC regs... just like most Fed agencies, the rules are sometimes senseless.  I'm 100% authorized to use the freqs I use, but the radio itself doesn't technically meet the regs...
