There's one for sale nearby, with 217k miles on it. Carfax doesn't list anything disturbing about it. What do I ask about? It is at a deal, with a reasonable reputation.

? Need more info. Manual trans? (good) Auto at that mileage: timebomb Good cars, sensitive cooling systems, nice to drive and surprisingly efficient for that size car. Engines/manual trans/diff are stout, but some of the luxury/options fail which will drive you insane if you try to fix them or you can let it go and enjoy the driving dynamics.

i will say that a tired, sloppy suspensioned e39 can drive a lot nicer than a bad PPI will make you think it should.

I won't buy a BMW automatic from '95 - '08. Manual's are the only way to go IMO.
Several car friends have had them crap out with no warning and they're expensive buggars to fix.

Yeah, the auto box makes it a no-go in my book. Some of them go forever, some of them die without warning. Not good enough odds for my taste.
