Well, there is no maitance history on my 1993 Cherokee sport. So I looked in the service manual for a vehicle with 98,xxx miles. At 85K basically you change all the fluids. So I did.

this is what $100 will buy you at Autozone. 6 Quarts of oil, 4 Quarts of Automatic Transmission fluid (in a big jug) and 4 more quarts in Quart containers for Transfer Case and extra in the garage. 3 quarts of 75W-90W Gear Oil. 1 tratment of Techron cleaner for the fuel system and injectors. 1 Air filter. 1 fuel filter. 1 oil filter. 1 tube of black sealant (for the differentials)

Here is the air filter that came out. This lets me know that maintance may not have been the highest priority for the previous owner:

And here it is up on the ramps for easier access to the filters and drain plugs:

Today I did the oil filter, oil and transmission fluid and the air filter. On Sunday (Dec 6) I will do the differentials and the fuel filter, it just got too cold as the sun was going down today to finish all of it.

This XJ is a daily driver and will be towed behind our 36 ft RV on our trip to Alaska in June and July 2010.

When you flat tow do you pull drive shafts or just put the transfer case into N

The plan right now is to just put the tranfercase into N, is there more to it than that? (seriously)

    In reply to Woody:

LOL yup that is on the agenda for Tomorrow, the transfer case and the differentials. I am also doing the Fuel filter.

Thanks for the pic, I always wondered what they looked like on the inside :)

There was a lot more of the inside laying on the top of the skid plate.

When you flat tow most folks say it's ok to just pop it in neutral. Some pull the d-shaft out but the service manual says just put it in N.

98+K miles, huh. Personal experience with my '93 Sport indicates you can get AT LEAST another 130+K miles out of it. Have fun!

I gained a consistent 1.5-2.5 mph in my '98 sport by switching out the dif and axle fluids with synthetics and greasing the u-joints. Was the first time I dabbled withthe top shelf gear oils, but it made me a believer.

Was that MPH? or did you mean MPG? I don't know what the top speed is of mine is and probably never will.

They had the high end synthetics ther, but I opted for thr cheaper stuff this time. Next time I may go with the synthetics. I gotta pay for braces for my oldest son's teeth right now

I blew a headgasket at 358k on one of my 4.0 cherokees, so be ready for that one.. Maybe buy a gasket now because they'll be discontinued by the time yours has that many miles
