I thought that you were saying that wider would be better in MI than in Hawaii due to weather. I was off topic in regards to the ABS ramifications of tire size. I don't know enough about ABS to have an opinion!

TLDR:
It wont do E36 M3. It'll be just fine. If the ABS was that sensitive itd start acting up every time some idiot ran 10 psi low on tire pressures.

FWIW, I'm running a 225/45/17 on my 17x8's that are on my WRX for now. They fit fine, with no stretch or any ill effects. I know it's a different car and wheels, but I don't see a problem running those.

Well, you certainly wouldn't want to run 225/45-17s on the front and 245/45-17s on the back of your WRX, but that's for entirely different reasons.
