Some of the factory tow package wiring harnesses trigger the computer to adjust shift points. Not saying yours did, but some do.

The different ratings is due to the transmission. The manual transmission Jeeps are rated at a whole lot less than the automatic transmission Jeeps.
IMO, the real issue with using an XJ as a tow vehicle is that it's a fairly short wheelbase vehicle that's not very wide. I don't mind towing around town at low speeds with a smaller vehicle, but on the highway I want something a bit larger.
ok. 2000 / 5000 lbs...here's the difference.
2000# is for the manual trans (my '98) which came with 3.07 gears. why they used these with the manual I'll never understand. It makes it feel like it's towing a trailer when it isn't
autos got 3.55 and I've heard of 3.73 though I haven't seen one.
mine will soon have 4.10 so screw Jeep
IIRC, you couldn't get a tow package on an XJ with a manual transmission. I know the clutches are a weak point, and any of the manual transmissions that aren't the AX15 are made out of glass. Heck, even my AX15 is crap, but that's because it has 265,000 miles of no maintenance.
I'm seriously considering an AW4 swap. After buying a manual Jeep and driving an auto Jeep, I prefer the auto by far.

me too. next time you're stuck in a snow drift try rocking it out with the manual. every time you go to reverse you grind the gears and lose all your momentum
I'm in Florida. I don't have snow, but I have a ton of mud and sand. While you guys have snow part of the year, we have mud and sand all year.

And there is no weight on the back.
I was in a cherokee that jackknifed trying to turn right from a stop at the bottom of a hill on a dry road. The trailer just pushed the thing out sideways from an almost complete stop.
One thing i suggest anyone try for a bit of perspective on stability is to just walk out to the your truck and push/pull on the back corner sideways rythmically and see how much you can get the thing gyrating without the tires ever moving an inch. ALL of that is in the sidewalls, something cherokees tend to have way too much of as well.

It will pull the trailer but you will not enjoy it. I used to tow my ITA Mr2 on an open trailer behind my XJ and after a trip to homestead and back at 50 mph I sold it and bought a suburban... The gas mileage was horrible, and the brakes are frightening. It was even worse with mine because I had a 5 inch lift and 32x11.5's on it plus a heavy a$$ winch and winch bumper.
...sometimes I look back at the stupid things I did in the past and wonder how I never hurt myself or others...

why are LSX swaps not more common? You'd think somebody would have more or less a kit like they did at JTR for Jags and S10s. Just sayin

Because on a 4.0 cherokee that is running well, engine and transmission are about the last things you need to change. Plus, I've seen with too much torque can do to an X unibody. My friend had a lifted jeep with a 350 in it and is currently swapping it out for a 4bt cummins. He's front halfing the whole frame and then removing the real coils. He's also got a few unibody rips to repair.
For swaps check out Advance Adapters for SBC, 4.3 & 3.8 engine/ trans swaps into the XJ. I had the kits for the SBC/ 4.3 w/ 700R trans to the XJ T-case. Good quality, price not way bad. My transmission buddy claims the t-case is good for 500 hp. A 6-pt. cage will stiffen up the unibody pretty well.
Because on a 4.0 cherokee that is running well, engine and transmission are about the last things you need to change.
