  • May 12, 2009 10:02 a.m. Andy Hollis

We ran out of space in the print mag for all the run data from the recent UHP tire shootout "Texas Toasted Tires". For those that want to drill down, here's that data. First set of four runs on each tire was Andy driving, second four was Per. There are segment times for the opening 90-degree turns, slalom, and the esses/sweeper section, and then a total time for each run. See the print mag for a course map. Lots of interesting stuff here.

And BTW, test #2 is done, written, and going to print for the August edition. That one will compare the top three from this test (run in reverse order) to the new Yoko AD08 and the Toyo in 225 size.

    Enjoy!

Why did you run the original Falken times instead of the second set? It seems like the drivers learned the course or the weather improved or something to bring the tires way down (when we're talking tenths of a second). Also, after such an improvement why not retest the Dunlops as well, especially since they seem to be the "hot" one right now and the stats don't make sense compared to actual results in autocrosses.

Pretty standard tire testing, you rerun the first set to verify the tires data over the drivers learning curve.

So why not print the second set of times as the results for the Falkens? No reason that they should have to suffer the half second penalty just for being first.

The second test is simply to check the original test results. If we saw something way off, we'd have to retest everything. If we had used the better Falken results, someone would be accuse us of preferring them by giving two chances at the test.

Autocross results are somewhat "noisy" data compared to measured testing.

Event results are more indicative of driver talent, and you're rarely dealing with a large sample group using identical equipment. For what its worth, so far this year the highest Street Touring finish at a national tour on Dunlops is 14th. Not the hot one on a national level, at least in this size.

the retest Falken numbers were printed in the summary.

Actually, the results do makes sense, relative to national competition, for the size that we tested. If we were testing on a WRX Sti, the Dunlop would have done better.

Per: your impressions weren't published in the mag; are you willing to share them here?

I ordered the Kumhos last week, and the raw data certainly seems similar enough to justify the purchase of the 'underdog'. $91/tire FTW!

Hi! The tone and the impressions that aren't specifically attributed to Andy are mine. I liked the RE11 and the XS the best and really couldn't get a handle on the R1R—Andy has the familiarity with both the car and Toyos to make them sing to their potential. The Falken felt the fastest to me, but the timers said otherwise.

Do you guys have any opinion/insight/random guesses on how these results would translate to heavier cars and larger tires?
