I also love E21's, but they seem to be gone. 2002's survived and E30's are almost plentiful.

The thing about BMW's is that they get driven. Buyers love them and then drive the crap out of them. If I could buy a new 2002 or late 80's 325, I would, but they're gone.

The only low mileage E30's I see are automatics. How difficult is a 5 speed swap?

The swap isn't toooo hard. Parts cost should be ~$500 (at least, where I am). It's an opportunity to put a lighter flywheel and better clutch in. ;)

Box flares make e21s awesomer - I keep seeing e21s popping up around here for cheap.

    Granted, I wouldn't dismiss the idea of a resto-mod 2002 fitting with a breathed on M42 (the poor man's S14).

Don;t dismiss the M42/44 From what I have seen said by some BMW engineers.. that engine's head flowed BETTER than the S14's. It's just a shame that BMW hamstrung it to keep that engine from competing the europe only 320i with the 2.0 Six that made all of 150hp

I dont think it's fair to call the m10 powered e30s 'bottom of the barrel.'

I love that mill. It's great. I don't know why I love it. It seems to move the car incredibly well. And if you like to tinker, word on the street is they take a lot of boost. The 318i is much lighter than it's i6 older brother. Those motors are insane with a turbo slapped on it, though. (The m20 I believe)

I personally would like to see an m10 with a proper standalone, some fancy tuning, a well selected supercharger, and a well engineered exhaust system.

Of course a cheaper and faster way to go is "LS1!" I don't think it's possible to beat that.

2002s do look really cool though.

I may be biased, considering that I am in a co-dependent relationship with my 85 318i sedan.
