For the record, my father and I put 125k trouble free miles on a Stealth RT/TT between us. Not so much as a hiccup. Loved that car.

Did I miss it, or has no one mentioned a 944 turbo? (or 944 LS*)

+1on the 944 Turbo. Plenty of legroom, power, comfortable, and a nice one can be had for 8k. I use mine as a DD often.

Of course you could always drop in the later silvertop or blacktop engines (provided you can get them in the US as an import engine from Japan). They add a useful 20-40bhp...
That was kind of my point. With $8K in purchase price, you are likely to get one that already has the 20 valve motor, or a turbo, or a supercharger. That's a hefty price tag in the worlds of AE86's. To give you an idea, this clean restored, 20valve swapped, fan-boy Initial D car is for sale now for only $8500 asking price.
Oh man, I better go weld my wallet shut.

Well, looks like my timeframe just got bumped up - the Civic was in the middle of a five car pileup. It's still drivable, but I'm probably going to see if I can buy something this weekend.

Now go convince everyone else of that. Maybe the prices will come down and I'll be able to afford one again.

I'll put in for the C4 as long as it has the LT1. Great power potential, cheap parts, inspired front suspension, glorious aftermarket support, tons of comfy room, and great even as a stock package. My first choice would be a 95; last of the OBD1, last of the LT1 as the only engine. LT4 is fine, but unnecessary given the cheap aftermarket possibilities. LT4 has raised intake ports requiring the LT4 intake to match the LT4 heads. That kinda ropes you into expensive and rare LT4 parts, but LT1 stuff is a dime a dozen (sorta). I have several recipes for 450+ hp in an LT1 that still passes smog with ease.

actually I do sort of agree with him. most definitely not the prettiest car I've ever laid eyes on, that's for sure. nothing this side of the car crusher can beat an old Gremlin or a post-facelift Pacer for having been beaten seven-eights of the way to death with the ugly stick though
back to the topic at hand though, I would throw another vote at the Starion, or a GTO if you can get your hands on one in your price range

You could get an ~M-B SL~ for those numbers.
A bit too large for me (I have a Miata and MGB), but they ~are~ nice.
If RWD was a requirment, I'd look at a nice, mid-size pickup too (with nice wheels/tires/etc).
And for the record, we have a 5-speed Jag X-Type that we've put tons of miles on since '03. Maybe just because Ford build a ton of them, but our's was cheap and seems well assembled. I wouldn't recommend this car to everyone (becasue normal service is probably a ripoff....we do our own) but our's has never any problems of any kind.
