So the arm rest on the pathfinder has a rip in it? Quick fix was duct tape over it to keep it from expanding. The material is some kind of plastic that tries to imitate the texture on leather. Took some pics with the cellphone. Any cheap or DIY fix for the rip?

    Duct tape.

If you want to be classy, get the black stuff.

its only temporary and we don't have any black duct tape. Though black electrical tape might look better. anyone have this problem before?

Nope, you're the first person in history to have dried out, ripped viny. Bummer. Time for a new car, I guess.

You get one of those vinyl repair kits, available in many locations. Put a little backing behind it, mix the color to match, put it in the rip, put the cover piece over it that matches your pattern, let air dry or use an iron, depending on the brand, done. Or take the whole thing apart and replace the material.

Put black duct tape on it and forget it

You're much better off with vinyl than leather. I have a leather steering wheel cover on the Samurai (for now) and it smells like dead cow skin.
