What does everyone use to keep the rubber valve cover gasket in place while you are installing it? I'm changing the gasket on my accord and it's a devil to keep in place. Do you use a sealant and if so, which one? Thanks,

    In reply to midknight:

Small dabs of high temp RTV. Red in color IIRC.

I've had good results using dabs of Monkey Snot (3M adhesive) to hold the gasket onto the valve cover, and Hylomar on the other face. Apply MS, mate the gasket to the VC, unmate for about 3-5 minutes to allow the solvent to flash off and the MS to get tacky, then re-mate, position, and allow to set for 15-20 minutes. Carefully apply a thin layer of Hylomar to the face, then install and torque the fasteners to spec. You can remove the valve cover from then on without changing the gasket.

Hondabond is the best hylomar / RTV out there, IMHO. Available at your local parts counter.

Do you need to change the gasket every time you remove the valve cover? Like... even if you changed it just a few days ago, but disovered you needed to change something else?

Not if you use the Hylomar. It allows you to take parts apart without having to redue the adhesive or need another gasket. I used it alot on Hewland gear boxes because we had to change gears alot and could reuse the gasket over and over. Take a look at my site, bigwrenchracing.com and you can read about Hylomar. Also have both kinds of adhesive for holding the gasket in place.

Hmm... I changed my timing belt not too long ago, had to open it back up when I discovered I installed a cam seal wrong, and now the valve cover gasket has a spot where it's weeping. I'm wondering if I should just get a new gasket, or if that's unnecessary.
