Anybody have any info on these? I've never heard of them until one recently popped up on CL (82 with 55k miles for $1900). Are they RWD or FWD? Looks like it could be a neat little DD.

I have been helping a friend with one that he is turning into an El-quantimino. (dont worry, he has a nice quantum wagon DD as well)
FWD, 5cyl, CIS injection system
the injection system is odd to say the least. there is a flapper that opens up that pulls down on a diaphragm that directly injects the fuel into the runners (or was it the head?) they share much DNA with AUDI's (i dont know which exactly off the top, but my friend would)

my friend seems to enjoy his, however i believe that some parts can be a PITA to find (trim and body IIRC) as they are somewhat rare

There are 4wd ones too. If you ever see one in a junkyard, pll the rear a-arms, brake caliper brackets, and rear subframe, they are worth $$ to the right person (they can be used along with other parts to convert an Mk2 to awd).

in fact your right.. now that i think about it, i think both of my friends are AWD.. (we were just trying to get the engine running in the one, never poked in the rest of the driveline.)

The AWD models were called "Synchro".

5 posts and nobody is going to make the 'quantum mechanics' joke? Sheesh!

The daughter to a co-worker once had a Quantum Synchro wagon. Like a lot of women, she bought a vehicle based on price and rarely on condition at time of sale or with any consideration for maintenance costs or insurance costs. After she "blew" the engine on the Quantum, she was very close to buyng a Bronco II til I pointed out that it was not very practical for carry 1 pre-school child and 1 infant.

Quantums share quite a bit of their mechanicals with Audi 4000 series cars. I've been told by a former VW/Audi tech that the Quantums are not as good as the Audis, particularly the electrical systems. That's about the limit of my knowledge.

I had an 84 quantum wagon through most of college.
all i remember about it was that it ran hot all the time. it never overheated, but the needle always seemed to rest in the upper 2/3rds of the gauge. The valvetrain got noisy and the transmission quit using 3rd for the first few minutes you drove it and I got rid of it.

I think the front part of the quantum suspension is like the audi 5000, the rear part is like the other VW syncro cars we never got here. Someone I know is planning to build an MK2 golf with haldex awd and a newer TDI using the rear suspension from the quantum syncro (if replacing the center tunnel with a corrado one and replacing the rear floor pan doesnt scare you, the rest is just bolt in and wiring once you have the parts).

CIS sucks with extreme gusto. I assume you can use Audi parts and go MSFI without too much trouble if it craps out on you, 'cuz you probably aren't going to fix it.
My dad bought a fwd sedan the week I was born, so I have a fondness for the things.
