Ok so I am be modifying CV joints so that they fit something other then what they were intended for. This will require so welding of the shafts connected to the joints. Is the grease going to catch on fire or be affected in any bad way?

Depends on the type of welding. I would disassemble the joints and clean them so that you can ensure you get good clean welds. Cover the internals with a blanket to keep slag out of the machined parts.

It will probably smoke and kinda stink, but I doubt it will catch fire. Even if it does, it won't be much of a fire.

remove the shafts and weld and then reassemble ,some are difficult, what type are you using?

They are off a 250 ATV. I currently have one I am playing with but it is a outer one so it can't be disassembled. It will be TIG welding. Should I use inner ones?

The shafts are going to be as brittle as peppermint sticks after welding.

why can't you remove the outer joints? Also I'm not a welder, and I've never attempted anything like this, but there was a discussion about just this subject a few years ago on the old forum. I think it was related to some-one's formula SAE project. I think some-one posted that they shortend some cv shafts by cutting a section out of the middle and welding it back together with a tight fitting steel tube over the joint as a reinforcement.

Yeah, you would probably need to re-heat-treat

I guess we could get outer joints. We welded the axles last year. Why would it present problems on bought CV joints vs the U-joints we made last year? And like I said we are using TIG.
